GTA VI headed to PS5 as a digital-only $79.99 launch

Sony is positioning itself as the main console beneficiary of Take-Two Interactive Software's "Grand Theft Auto VI," which is set to release on November 19 and run exclusively on PlayStation 5 hardware. According to a July 30 Economic Times report citing Kantan Games founder Serkan Toto, GTA VI will be console-only and the vast majority of new users will choose a PS5. The base version will be priced at $79.99 and will be digital-only. Take-Two has sold nearly 230 million units of "Grand Theft Auto V" since 2013, and had aimed to release the sequel last year before delaying it twice.
Memory chip costs cloud Sony's PS5 outlook
Analysts said the GTA VI release will soften the decline of PS5 hardware sales this year and support growth in software sales, though rising memory-chip prices are already reshaping Sony's production plans. Sony has said it has secured memory supply for the current financial year but expects prices to remain high next year. CLSA analyst Amit Garg told Reuters that Sony would lose substantial money selling PS5 hardware if current memory prices for future contracts are factored in, and could produce lower volumes next year while waiting for prices to come down. Sony is scheduled to report first-quarter earnings on Friday.
Sony's 2028 move away from physical discs
The July 30 Economic Times report also noted that Sony plans to stop manufacturing physical discs from 2028, a step analysts described as aimed at protecting profit amid the broader shift away from physical media. GTA VI's PS5 edition being digital-only aligns with that direction. Investor concern over memory costs and AI's impact on Sony's entertainment business has weighed on its share price in recent months.
C-Smash VRS returns to third-person on PS5
Developer Wolf & Wood is bringing a non-VR edition of its PSVR2 reimagining "C-Smash VRS" to PlayStation 5 later this year, according to a July 30 Arcade News report. Titled "C-Smash VRS – New Dimension," the version restores the third-person action of Sega's 2001 arcade and Dreamcast title "Cosmic Smash" and will support standard controllers. Existing owners will also receive access.
Intergalactic avoids the physical media cull
Naughty Dog's "Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet" remains on track despite Sony's plan to discontinue physical discs in 2028, Gaming Bible reported on July 30. The report described the update as positive for the "Last of Us" developer's next project, though no specific release window appeared in the available evidence.
Follow-up signals
Sony is set to report first-quarter earnings on Friday, with investors watching for guidance on memory procurement and PS5 production volumes. Take-Two's GTA VI launch on November 19 and the 2028 end of Sony's physical disc manufacturing are the next key milestones flagged in the available source set.
