Free ad-supported cloud gaming test for Xbox Insiders

Microsoft began testing free, ad-supported cloud gaming this week, letting Xbox Insiders stream select games they already own at no cost in exchange for watching ads before each session, the company announced on Xbox Wire. The post described the program as a limited-time experiment that lets participants stream select titles from their libraries without a Game Pass subscription. The arrangement offers a zero-dollar on-ramp for lapsed players and a way for Xbox One owners to play Series X|S titles without buying new hardware.

Session mechanics and limits

Sessions are capped at one hour—the same free-tier limit Nvidia's GeForce Now uses—and ads run before sessions begin without interrupting gameplay. Microsoft framed the program as a "test and learn" period and called the goal giving more people more affordable ways to play on devices they already own, according to a statement shared with Gizmodo. The company has not said when, or whether, the test will expand beyond Insiders, and signals to watch include which games make the "select" list, how many ads a session carries, and whether the one-hour cap survives contact with players who just rediscovered a free way to play.

Pricing context and Microsoft reorganization

The test lands amid rising costs and layoffs across the Xbox business. Game Pass Ultimate jumped to $30 a month last year before recently installed Xbox CEO Asha Sharma brought it back to $22, per Gizmodo, which cites Wall Street Journal reporting that Game Pass sits around 30 million subscribers against a target of 77 million by the end of 2026. After the latest hardware price hike, the Series S starts at $500 and the disc-less Series X at $750. Engadget notes Microsoft is cutting roughly 3,200 jobs in a reorganization that divests studios and cancels projects, with Xbox running on thin margins.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 delayed on Game Pass

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 has been removed from the July 2026 Xbox Game Pass lineup because Microsoft is still working through required licensing approvals. The game was originally scheduled to join the service on July 21, 2026, but later disappeared from the official list of upcoming additions. Microsoft initially added a short editor's note confirming the removal without explaining the reason, then clarified that the issue involves approvals from licensors and said another update would follow when more information is available. The removal does not appear to be a permanent cancellation, though no new release date has been announced. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4 remains available on Game Pass in the meantime.

Competitive timing with Amazon Luna

The cloud gaming test coincides with Amazon beginning to integrate its Luna cloud service into the Prime Video app, according to Engadget, pushing cloud gaming into a video interface where advertising is already native. Nvidia normalized the time-boxed free tier with GeForce Now, and Microsoft is now testing whether ads can carry the infrastructure cost for owned-game streaming. For Microsoft, the experiment also doubles as an ad-inventory play, with pre-roll slots in front of engaged gamers mirroring the inventory streaming video services have already monetized, and the "test and learn" framing lets Xbox tune ad load before any general rollout.
