Dynamic download client enters Insider testing
Microsoft is evaluating a new Xbox Smart Download Client that selects and periodically switches between content servers during game installs and updates, aiming to improve speed and consistency. The feature is currently restricted to the Alpha Skip-Ahead Insider ring, the most experimental preview tier. Reporting from ChannelNews, surfaced by Windows News, notes that Windows Central observed a sustained 250 Mbps download on an Xbox Ally handheld, approaching the tested connection's maximum throughput. The same preview build reportedly includes a fix for game and app updates that fail to complete, addressing reliability alongside raw speed. Microsoft has not committed to a general release timeline, and the implementation could change before any broader rollout.
Ad-supported cloud streaming experiment
Xbox is experimenting with an advertising-based model for its cloud streaming service, letting players stream titles from their library for free in exchange for viewing ads. The Game Business reports that pre-roll ads run for around two minutes before a session starts and recur every hour, with individual sessions capped at one hour. Until now, cloud streaming was restricted to Xbox Game Pass subscribers. Xbox Chief Strategy Officer Matthew Ball, who discussed the ad model publicly before joining Microsoft, told the outlet he remains interested in how the format evolves. Microsoft has stressed that ad creative will be held to the same quality bar as the streamed content. Xbox 360-era classics arrive on PC via emulator
Microsoft has launched Xbox Backward Compatibility on PC with four titles: Blinx: The Time Sweeper, Conker: Live and Reloaded, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, and Fuzion Frenzy. Each game is sold individually for €10 and is included across all Xbox Game Pass tiers; players who previously bought the games digitally for consoles receive the PC versions at no extra cost. Technical analysis by security researcher Milenko, reported by TakeToNews, found that Fuzion Frenzy runs on the XeO3 emulator that powers Xbox 360 backward compatibility on Xbox One and Series X/S, with the older XEFU layer nested inside for original Xbox titles. The releases run on Windows 11 with a GeForce GTX 950 and 8 GB of RAM, and support up to 4× resolution scaling, VSync, anisotropic filtering, and improved anti-aliasing. Microsoft has not confirmed whether additional Xbox 360 games will follow, though the emulator is already in place.
Streaming competition extends to Prime Video and Netflix
The cloud-gaming push extends beyond Microsoft. Amazon has integrated its Luna streaming service into the Prime Video app, allowing Prime members to launch games directly from that interface. Netflix has meanwhile launched two streaming games, the horror title Unhinged and a FIFA World Cup tie-in, expanding its own catalogue. The Game Business frames these moves as a renewed attempt by major platforms to make game streaming a mainstream proposition, with Xbox's ad-supported test positioned as the most direct commercial experiment among them.
Bethesda lines up four new Fallout projects
Under Microsoft ownership, Bethesda has confirmed four new titles set in the Fallout universe at various stages of development, according to Compute Report. Specific details on each project remain undisclosed. The Fallout expansion arrives alongside Microsoft's broader gaming initiatives, including ad-supported cloud streaming, the new PC backward-compatibility programme, and ongoing Xbox hardware planning under the next-generation "Project Helix" effort.
