Enstar appeals Alaska storage ruling

Enstar Natural Gas is appealing a decision by the Regulatory Commission of Alaska (RCA), arguing that additional natural gas storage capacity cannot wait. The Alaska Public Media report, published July 24, describes the appeal as a challenge to the RCA's earlier determination, with Enstar contending that the commission's ruling fails to address the urgency of expanding storage infrastructure used to serve customers. Enstar is one of Alaska's largest natural gas utilities and has pressed for storage expansion to bolster supply reliability in Southcentral communities.

India NSE launches domestic-benchmark gas futures

The National Stock Exchange of India will introduce Indian Natural Gas Futures on July 27, according to a BusinessLine report published July 24. The contract is cash-settled and described as India's first exchange-traded energy derivative linked to a domestic benchmark, with the stated aim of enabling transparent, India-centric price discovery for the country's natural gas market. The launch marks a structural shift away from referencing imported benchmarks and gives domestic producers, utilities, and traders a locally priced hedging instrument.

Separate developments, shared commodity

The two filings cover materially distinct jurisdictions and instruments: Enstar's appeal concerns physical gas storage infrastructure in Alaska, while the NSE product is a financial futures contract tied to a domestic Indian price index. Both, however, reflect ongoing moves across producing and consuming regions to localize how natural gas capacity and pricing are governed, with storage adequacy contested in one regulatory forum and benchmark formation opened up in another marketplace.
