Baytown outage moved and tied to $110 million upgrade package
JSW Steel USA has pushed back a planned 45-day outage at its plate mill in Baytown, Texas, from August into September so the downtime can be paired with a $110 million program of equipment upgrades, the company’s top executive said. Speaking at the SMU Steel Summit on Aug. 26, JSW Steel CEO Robert Simon said the outage would begin roughly 10 days from that date and that the site is expected to produce about 20% more steel once the work is complete. The push to thicker plate and value-added grades is being made alongside a hydraulic crown and down-camber control unit installation, according to Simon.
Mingo Junction work sets the template for Baytown
The Baytown investment follows a $145 million upgrade and extended outage that JSW Steel USA recently completed at its Mingo Junction, Ohio mill, where a new caster can now cast slabs up to 12 inches thick. Mingo Junction supplies slabs that are rolled into coil at ATI Inc.’s mill in Brackenridge, Pa., or into plate at Baytown. Simon described Mingo as one of the most modern casters in operation after a history of idlings and ownership changes stretching back to Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel’s 2004 installation of its electric arc furnace. JSW Steel USA, a subsidiary of India’s JSW Steel, acquired Mingo Junction from Acero Junction in 2018, restarted it in 2021 after a pandemic-related idling, and is now applying the same value-add playbook at Baytown.
SSAB and Oregon Steel Mills map their own plate-mill schedules
The shift toward value-added plate is industry-wide, executives said on the same panel. SSAB Americas Chief Commercial Officer Jeff Moskaluk said the company’s Montpelier, Iowa plate mill will go down for routine, mostly hot-end refractory maintenance in September, with rolling-mill work folded into the same window. SSAB Americas, part of Sweden’s SSAB, runs a second U.S. plate mill in Mobile, Ala., and alternates outages between the two sites every year. Oregon Steel Mills, by contrast, took an outage at its Portland, Ore., plate mill last year and has no additional downtime scheduled in the near term.
Investor calendar set for September
JSW Steel separately disclosed on Aug. 31 that it will meet institutional investors at the UBS India Summit 2026 in Mumbai on Sept. 10 and at the Jefferies 5th India Forum in Gurugram on Sept. 18, with one-on-one and group sessions at both events. The filings were made under SEBI Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements Regulation 30(6) and signed by interim Company Secretary Manoj Prasad Singh. The disclosure noted the schedule may shift due to exigencies on either side. The meetings come as JSW Steel continues to position its U.S. operations around thicker plate, advanced high-strength steels, and other value-added grades.
