NMDC's Tokisud North Coal Start
State-owned NMDC plans to begin commercial thermal coal production by the October–December quarter of FY27 from its Tokisud North mine in Jharkhand, targeting around 1 MT of dry-fuel sales within FY27, Chairman Amitava Mukherjee told PTI. "We have reached the coal seam (of Tokisud North coal mine), and the production will start by next quarter," Mukherjee said, adding that the company will "sell a maximum of 1 MT of the commodity to potential buyers" in the current fiscal year.
Tokisud North Reserves and Capacity
NMDC earlier won Tokisud North, which holds 52 MT of reserves, in a coal ministry auction, and the mine has a peak rated capacity of 2.3 MT. The company also won the Rohne coking coal block in Jharkhand, with 191 MT of reserves, and plans to start developing the coking coal mine within FY27, with production targeted from FY28.
Mineral Diversification Roadmap
NMDC aims to derive at least 20% of its total revenue from minerals other than iron ore by 2030, framing the move as part of a roadmap aligned with the government's Viksit Bharat vision. "Right now, we are 99.9 per cent an iron ore company. We aim to help the growing industries in the country with maximum of their mineral needs," Mukherjee said.
Iron Ore Base and FY26 Results
The Hyderabad-based miner, which operates under the Ministry of Steel and supplies about 20% of India's iron ore needs, recorded a 33% revenue rise to ₹31,554 crore in FY26 and achieved record iron ore production of 53 MT in the same fiscal year, against 44 MT in FY25. The company is also targeting 100 MT of annual iron ore output by 2030.
Next Verifiable Milestone
The next verifiable milestone is the start of commercial thermal coal output at Tokisud North in Q3 FY27 (October–December 2026), with NMDC's FY27 thermal coal sales print expected around the end of the fiscal year in March 2027.
