John Legend has announced his forthcoming studio album, Muse, set for release on October 23 via Republic Records. The EGOT-winning singer-songwriter revealed that the project was written and recorded at Pharrell Williams's studio at Louis Vuitton's headquarters in Paris, where Pharrell serves as men's creative director. Muse is entirely produced by Pharrell, who also co-wrote songs and appears as a featured artist on six tracks. Legend framed the collaboration as a deliberate departure from the piano-driven ballads that have defined much of his catalog. "You can hear traces of me and traces of him, but it sounds like something new for the both of us," Legend said in a press release. "The combination of me and Pharrell, on paper, I think, is a good idea. And the execution is even better."
The lead single and Paris sessions
The lead single, "Daylight," arrived on streaming services following a preview performance broadcast during CBS's America's Tailgate from Nashville the night before its release. Muse also includes "Pray For Ya," previously featured in Louis Vuitton's Fall-Winter 2026 Men's runway show. The album's title and opening track draw on the nine Muses of ancient Greek mythology and chronicle a relationship "against the romantic backdrop of Paris and high art," according to the press release. Legend cited Nina Simone, Nat King Cole, and Marvin Gaye among the project's influences and described its aesthetic as "Black James Bond … but with a modern backbeat at its foundation."
Pharrell's creative role and the Clipse connection
The partnership traces back to Legend's guest vocal on "The Birds Don't Sing," the opening track of Clipse's 2025 album Let God Sort 'Em Out, which Pharrell produced in full. That appearance, Legend said, prompted Pharrell to propose a full-album collaboration: "When Pharrell called me, I thought, let's do this." In a statement, Legend added, "A lot of people would have imagined we'd done something like this already, but we hadn't. It felt past due." Pharrell's imprint extends across the project: he co-wrote material and features on the tracks "Muse," "Her," "Get Back," "Are You Ok?," "Next Time," and "Fireflies." Clipse returns the favor with a guest appearance on "Bodies on the Floor." On the creative process, Legend said, "It's not about winning the argument or ego. It's about the music winning. Every battle should be won by the art."
Track listing and upcoming tour
The 16-track standard edition of Muse includes an opening "Muse" featuring Pharrell, "Pray For Ya," "Her Introduction," "Her" with Pharrell, "Daylight," "Get Back" with Pharrell, "Are You Ok?" with Pharrell, an "Under The Bridge Introduction," "Under The Bridge," "Next Time" with Pharrell, a "Bodies On The Floor – Taps Introduction," "Bodies On The Floor" featuring Clipse, "Doing Me," "Fireflies" with Pharrell, "Everything," and "Sail Off." The album is now available for preorder and presave. Legend's tour supporting the album opens September 10 in Doha, Qatar, at the Qatar National Convention Center, followed by a September 26 date at the Great Lawn at Central Park in New York and a November 14 show at Ridgefield Playhouse in Ridgefield, Connecticut.
A new creative posture
Legend cast Muse as a project built on urgency rather than retrospection. "There are plenty of artists who get to a point in their career where they don't make anything new. We can just play the hits; we can stay in our comfort zone," he said. "But I believe it's important to keep the mindset that I have to continue to prove myself. I wanted this album to have that sense of urgency — to feel like something that needed to be made and is fully worthy of my audience's attention." Of his expanded vocal trust in Pharrell, Legend noted, "I recorded some songs on this album that [Pharrell] fully wrote, which I almost never do," framing the album as an explicit break from his usual working method.
Next milestone
Muse arrives in stores and on streaming platforms on October 23 via Republic Records, following Legend's Doha concert on September 10 and a Central Park performance on September 26.
