The Lions overwhelmed Ospreys 35-19 in a United Rugby Championship match at Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg on 3 October, scoring six tries to three to secure a bonus-point win and follow up their opening-round victory over defending champions Leinster. Ospreys led 12-10 at half-time after responding to an early Erich Cronje try with scores from Keiran Williams and Efan Daniel, but the home side took control of set pieces after the interval and ran in five unanswered tries before a late Ospreys consolation.
How the scoreboard unfolded
Chris Smith opened the Lions' account with a penalty from a scrum infringement before Cronje finished in the corner from a midfield turnover, with Smith adding the conversion. Ospreys then struck twice in the closing minutes of the first half: Williams powered over after an offload from Evardi Boshoff, and hooker Daniel touched down from a driving line-out, both converted by Dan Edwards to send the visitors in ahead. The Lions hit back immediately after the restart when PJ Botha scored from a maul after the TMO reversed an Ospreys lineout, and replacement Morne Brandon added a similar maul try. Full-back Boeta Chamberlain crossed in the 57th minute to secure the bonus point, and wing Kelly Mpeku went over twice down the right before flanker Ross Moriarty scored Ospreys' third try with the final play.
Smith's off-day at the kicking tee
The margin would have been wider had Lions fly-half Chris Smith enjoyed his usual accuracy. After converting Cronje's opening try and earlier landing a penalty, he missed all four conversion attempts that followed, leaving the scoreboard short of what the home side's dominance deserved. The performance followed his prolific form last season but suggested room for improvement in front of goal as the Lions target successive URC play-off appearances.
Ospreys head home with lessons learned
Ospreys, who opened their season with a bonus-point defeat at Sharks in Durban, return to Wales with a single point from two South African fixtures. The tour concluded without a win, though the side showed they could compete with both South African franchises for stretches. Head coach Mark Jones made 12 personnel changes, including handing a first captaincy to Wales wing Keelan Giles, and the match offered a reminder of how far the Welsh regions must travel to compete in the South African conference.
What's next for both sides
Ospreys face a quick turnaround with a Welsh derby against Dragons at Rodney Parade on Friday, 9 October (19:45 BST), while the Lions remain in South Africa to take on rivals Bulls in Pretoria the following Saturday before the league pauses for the first round of European fixtures.
