Port Adelaide confirmed on Saturday that former key forward Daniel Stewart died suddenly on Friday at age 37. Chief executive Matthew Richardson said the news had come as a shock and that the club was deeply saddened by the “sudden passing” of a player it considered part of its football family.

The club said it would support Stewart’s family, former teammates and staff, and asked that the family’s privacy be respected.

Four seasons with the Power

Stewart played 36 AFL games and kicked 31 goals for Port Adelaide across four seasons from 2010 to 2013. The 200-centimetre forward was selected with pick No.35 in the 2009 Rookie Draft and promoted to the senior list at the end of that season.

Before joining the Power, Stewart played for Eastern Ranges, Queensland club Labrador and North Adelaide in the SANFL. He made his AFL debut against Geelong in round four of 2010, with a career-best four goals against Richmond in the final round of that year.

Family and club tributes

Richardson extended condolences to Stewart’s parents, Donna and Byron; his wife, Laura; their sons, Bernie and Lando; and his brother, Leigh. The club also acknowledged Stewart’s friends, including former teammate Matt Thomas, and people associated with North Adelaide and Labrador.

Former teammate and AFL media identity Kane Cornes described Stewart as “a brilliant and caring teammate” and said his heart went out to Stewart’s family. Stewart’s wife also confirmed the death and requested privacy for the family.

Memorial planned for 2027

Port Adelaide said it would wear black armbands for Stewart in its first home game at Adelaide Oval in 2027. The tribute establishes a planned memorial; the reviewed reporting does not provide a further scheduled milestone beyond that game.
