Anthropic on August 3 said it will enable Indian organizations to process Claude requests on servers located in India, with the capability set to go live through Amazon Bedrock in the coming weeks. The move brings Claude into line with rivals OpenAI and Google, which already offer local data processing for their respective AI models in India, and is intended to address data sovereignty requirements that have shaped enterprise purchasing decisions in the country.

Why enterprise customers asked for it

Anthropic described the ability to run Claude locally as one of the top requests from Indian organizations. The company said in-country inference would give banks, insurers, telecoms, and public and government agencies the assurance needed to deploy generative AI in production systems that handle sensitive personal data, alongside audit trails and access controls available through Amazon Bedrock deployments. "Bringing Claude inference to India is a turning point for enterprise AI in this country," said Irina Ghose, Anthropic's managing director of India.

India expansion and partnerships

Anthropic opened its first India office in Bengaluru in February 2026 after announcing its market expansion in October 2025, and has since expanded its local applied AI teams serving enterprises, digital-native companies, and startups. Ghose told Moneycontrol in February that Anthropic's run-rate revenue in India had doubled over the preceding period. India also recorded some of the highest registration numbers for the Claude Partner Network when it launched globally in March 2026, with Indian partners now occupying places in Anthropic's Global Premier, Preferred, and Select tiers. The company separately highlighted work with state governments, public health programmes, and partners including PopVax, which uses Claude on vaccine protein design for tuberculosis, hepatitis C, and Strep A programmes.

Pricing, language work, and prior restrictions

The in-country inference launch follows Anthropic's recent testing of local pricing in Indian rupees for new Claude subscriptions, although card remains the only supported payment method at present. Anthropic also pointed to ongoing language work in India, including a pilot with Karya using native speakers and domain experts to evaluate Claude across Indian languages in agricultural use cases, as part of progress under the New Delhi Frontier AI Impact Commitments signed six months earlier. The announcement comes after Anthropic temporarily suspended global access to its Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models in early June following a US government export control directive citing national security concerns; those restrictions were lifted on July 1.

What remains uncertain

The sources do not specify a launch date for in-country inference beyond the "coming weeks" timeframe, and Moneycontrol describes Anthropic as "IPO-bound" preparing for a potential public listing without confirming a filing timeline.
