Industry judgment

OpenAI's DevDay 2026 reframes ChatGPT from a chatbot into a persistent agent platform. The combination of always-on assistants, lower-cost near-frontier models, and developer-facing APIs signals that the competitive frontier has shifted from response quality to continuous task execution across third-party software.
What changes with Dots
Dots are GPT-6 Astra-powered agents that run on their own cloud computer and browser, can access more than 4,000 connected apps, and operate across ChatGPT, Slack, and Microsoft Teams. Each user receives an initial dot and can approve or block actions, while OpenAI pilots specialist dots for procurement, customer support, and commercial contracting. Rolling out first to ChatGPT Pro, Business Premium, and Enterprise subscribers in eligible markets, the agents turn ChatGPT into background infrastructure rather than a session-bound tool.
Pricing and model economics
The new $500 monthly ChatGPT Pro 500 plan carries 25 times the Plus usage allowance and unlocks Ultrafast processing for GPT-6 Astra in ChatGPT Work and Codex, where output runs up to eight times faster. GPT-6.1 Sol, a major upgrade to GPT-6 Sol, delivers near-Astra performance on agentic coding, computer use, and professional work at one-fifth the standard input and output token price, materially lowering the cost ceiling for production agent deployments.
Developer surface area
OpenAI also pushed DevDay 2026 into the developer stack. A cloud-based Codex expands coding-agent reach, the new Decisions API exposes decision-support capabilities, and ChatGPT Spaces creates a shared surface for humans and agents to collaborate. OpenAI cited a collective 1.2 billion weekly users, positioning the platform as a launch pad for third-party native experiences and embedding OpenAI deeper into enterprise workflows.
Counter-case
Dots' value depends on user willingness to grant broad cross-app permissions and on enterprise governance of agent-driven actions such as procurement and contracting; unresolved trust and compliance friction could slow adoption despite the lower model costs.
Next milestone
Watch enterprise rollout progress and developer uptake of Codex Cloud and the Decisions API as the next measurable signals of agent-platform traction.
