Tesla reschedules the Roadster reveal, citing severe weather

News illustration: Tesla pushes Roadster reveal to October 15 over severe weather forecast

Tesla told invitees on Monday that it is moving its long-delayed next-generation Roadster unveiling from October 1 to October 15, citing "severe conditions predicted" for central Texas and the fact that the event "can only be held outdoors." The company announced the new date in a short "Roadster event update" on X, saying it had been working with local meteorologists and would share additional details later. Earlier in the day, Tesla had emailed guests warning that the event "features a unique experience that must be held outdoors" and could be rescheduled.

Why weather forced a date change

The planned October 1 event was tied to SpaceX's rocket test site in McGregor, Texas, just outside Waco, where Tesla said it would demonstrate a hover sequence using a SpaceX-developed cold gas thruster package code-named A71. Because thrusters cannot be fired inside a tent, "outdoors" is a hard constraint rather than a stylistic choice. Forecast data for McGregor pulled Monday morning showed an 82% chance of precipitation on Thursday with thunderstorms and wind gusts up to 32 mph, while Friday carried a 75% rain chance and Saturday dropped to 42%. Tesla opted to move the date rather than attempt the hover demo in rough conditions, and the company has not yet named a venue for the rescheduled gathering.

A reveal that keeps slipping

The October 1 date had only been confirmed in mid-September, when Tesla posted a cryptic "Go for launch" teaser and Elon Musk replied that the new Roadster would be unveiled on October 1. That confirmation followed a chain of earlier missed targets stretching back nearly a decade: the next-generation Roadster prototype first appeared at the Tesla Semi event in November 2017 with production originally promised for 2020, then pushed through 2022, 2023, 2024 and into 2025–26. In late 2025, Musk floated an April 1, 2026 demo, then late spring, then August, and production is now discussed for 2027 or 2028. The two-week reschedule adds another fortnight for reservation holders who placed deposits as early as 2017, and the original 2017 pitch — a four-seat electric sports car with a claimed 1.9-second 0–60 mph time, more than 620 miles of range and a top speed above 250 mph — remains the benchmark the eventual demo must clear.

Reservations reopen alongside the delay

The postponement came about a week after Tesla reopened Roadster reservations with a $50,000 deposit. Earlier coverage noted Musk has previously dismissed the financial impact of the program, calling it a "small potato situation" that would not "move the needle in a major way financially," and the company has framed the Roadster as a halo project rather than a core revenue driver. No new venue, ticket logistics or production guidance were attached to Monday's update.

Other developments

Separately, on September 28, 2026, TSLA shares fell 3.9% to $357.45 amid broader volatility, according to a same-day market recap. Elsewhere on the same day, coverage flagged that Tesla was set to begin deliveries of its long-anticipated all-electric Semi truck after several years of delays.
