Beta build and testing path

Valve released SteamOS 3.8.26 as a beta on August 29, 2026, with the company indicating the build will be tested by users before any promotion to the stable channel. The update is described as focused primarily on addressing problems introduced in earlier beta releases rather than adding new features.

Performance regression addressed

One of the more prominent fixes targets performance issues triggered when composition is required. Valve said prior beta builds could cause degraded performance in certain situations, including cases where AMD FSR was enabled, and the 3.8.26 beta is intended to deliver more consistent behavior in those games.

Desktop Mode and VR corrections

The beta also addresses several Desktop Mode problems. Firefox could previously freeze when run in fullscreen, and certain displays were able to select resolutions below 640×480, which could render the desktop unusable; both issues are described as fixed. A separate VR fix works around a bug that could cause Unreal Engine 5 VR titles to display a blank image in the right eye.

Controller, Wi-Fi, and handheld-specific fixes

Connectivity and input stability receive attention as well. Bluetooth stability with the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller (v1) is improved, and a Wi-Fi regression that had been affecting the MSI Claw A1M is fixed. For other handhelds, Lenovo Legion Go models should now report battery information correctly, and the MSI Claw should no longer freeze when resuming with an SD card inserted or when an SD card is removed during suspend.

Next milestone

Valve has not announced a date for promoting 3.8.26 from beta to the stable channel; the next verifiable step is the company deciding whether the build clears beta testing and moves to general availability.
