What the copier percentage means

The calculator compares the physical width and height of a selected source sheet with a selected target sheet. It divides each target dimension by the corresponding source dimension and uses the smaller ratio, because both sides must fit. The result is the percentage normally entered into a copier or print dialog. For example, fitting A3 onto A4 produces about 70.7 percent; enlarging A4 onto A3 produces about 141.4 percent.

Source and target orientation are selected independently, and a second calculation can test a ninety-degree source rotation. Rotation is selected only when it creates a larger result that still fits within both target dimensions. The output shows the oriented source size, target size, scaled footprint, percentage, and whether rotation was used. This makes the decision auditable instead of returning an unexplained whole number. Printers commonly accept only integer percentages, so the page also reports a conservative rounded-down setting.

Paper standards and named sizes

A-series and listed B-series dimensions are expressed in millimetres and follow the familiar ISO paper-size relationships. The series is designed around a constant aspect ratio, which is why adjacent A sizes scale by approximately the square root of two. US Letter, Legal, and Tabloid are also included because English-language print workflows frequently cross between international and North American formats. The tool labels every physical dimension rather than assuming that the same name is used everywhere.

Named paper is only a geometric preset. A printer driver, scanner, finishing system, or regional supplier may use a tolerance, printable margin, custom tray definition, or borderless mode that changes the usable area. The calculator does not inspect a device profile. If the application already offers “Fit,” “Shrink oversized pages,” or margin-aware scaling, compare its print preview with the percentage shown here before producing a large batch.

How to use the result safely

Choose the original document size and orientation first, then the loaded destination paper and orientation. Enable rotation when the source may turn within the destination; leave it off when the top edge, binding, grain direction, or preprinted stationery must remain fixed. Enter the conservative whole percentage in the copier, then inspect one proof sheet. Check small type, crop marks, barcodes, ruler marks, and any element close to an edge before approving the remainder.

Scaling preserves proportions but changes the physical size of every feature. A one-inch calibration square, a sewing pattern, a legal form, or an accessibility-critical font will no longer have its original dimensions after enlargement or reduction. Use 100 percent and the correct source paper when exact physical scale is mandatory. A successful fit does not establish legal acceptability, archival quality, image resolution, or readability.

Limits beyond width and height

The formula does not account for unprintable margins. A source page with content extending to its edge may still clip on a destination printer even when the nominal sheet dimensions fit. Duplex alignment, feeder skew, toner spread, paper curl, booklet imposition, bleed, trim, and device calibration are also outside this calculation. Professional production should use the printer specification, a preflighted file, and a physical proof.

The listed dimensions are useful reference values, not a substitute for the current standard document or a manufacturer data sheet. Special envelopes, photographic formats, architectural sheets, books, newspapers, and custom cut stock can follow different systems. Entering a nearby named size can be convenient for an estimate but should not be described as an exact match.
