Compare an instant, not two static labels

Time-zone differences depend on a date. New York and London are often five hours apart, but their daylight-saving transitions do not always occur on the same weekend, so the difference temporarily changes. This calculator begins with a local calendar date and clock time in a source IANA zone, resolves that input to one UTC instant, and formats the same instant in the target zone. The displayed dates can differ when the conversion crosses midnight or the International Date Line.

The result shows both local readings, each UTC offset, and the signed difference between the zones at that instant. A positive target difference means the target clock is ahead of the source; a negative value means it is behind. The tool does not use a permanent table such as “city B is always eight hours ahead.” That distinction is necessary for travel, remote work, interviews, releases, broadcasts, and any event planned around civil time.

IANA zones and daylight-saving rules

Identifiers such as America/New_York, Europe/London, and Asia/Tokyo refer to rule sets maintained through the IANA Time Zone Database and distributed with modern browsers and operating systems. A geographic zone can include historical offset changes and recurring daylight-saving rules. A bare abbreviation such as CST is intentionally not accepted because it can refer to more than one region and may not identify a unique rule set.

The calculation uses the browser’s current time-zone data. Governments can change civil-time rules with little notice, and an older device may not yet contain a recent change. For a future flight, legal deadline, broadcast, or safety-critical operation, confirm the final time with the responsible organizer and a currently updated calendar system. The page is a planning aid, not an authoritative schedule.

Invalid and repeated local times

When clocks move forward, some wall-clock times never occur. When clocks move backward, a range of local times occurs twice. The workspace round-trips the chosen local time through the selected zone. It rejects a nonexistent time instead of silently shifting it, and it rejects an ambiguous repeated time instead of guessing whether the earlier or later occurrence was intended. Choose a nearby unambiguous time or obtain a verified UTC instant when that edge case matters.

These rejection paths protect the meaning of a dated appointment. A static offset calculator cannot detect them because it does not know the location rules or transition date. Even with a valid conversion, the page does not know a person’s travel status, device settings, office policy, calendar invitation behavior, or whether an event description already includes a different zone.

A practical scheduling workflow

Enter the date and time exactly as announced at the source location, then select the source zone before the target zone. Read the complete weekday and date on both sides, not only the hour. Copy the result into a calendar invitation with the named IANA zone when possible. If several participants are involved, share the UTC instant or a calendar event rather than a screenshot that may lose the zone context.

For recurring meetings, test dates in both winter and summer. A single conversion proves only the selected instant, not every occurrence in a series. For travel, recheck after airlines or rail operators update the timetable. For releases or automated jobs, store UTC internally and convert for display. Human-facing civil time remains essential, but one canonical instant reduces ambiguity between systems.
