Apple is preparing to release a new Mac mini in the coming days, potentially before its expected September iPhone event, according to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman. The launch would mark the first refresh of the Mac mini desktop in nearly two years.
Demand and supply-chain pressure
The Mac mini has become a particular pressure point for Apple's supply chain, with customer deliveries stretching to weeks or months in recent months. CEO Tim Cook has publicly said the problem would take time to resolve, and it remains unclear how the new model will affect wait times. The new version is being driven in part by demand from users looking to run AI applications and models locally.
M5 versus M6 silicon choice
Apple has tested versions of the new Mac mini with both its M5 and M6 generations of processors, according to the report. That contrasts with the upcoming iMac revamp, which is expected to use M6 chips.
Houston manufacturing link
The launch comes just weeks after Apple reiterated that it will begin manufacturing the Mac mini at its Houston facility later this year, a site Tim Cook toured with Trump administration officials. The same Houston facility houses Apple's new Advanced Manufacturing Center and is already producing and shipping the company's AI servers. Apple has said it invested hundreds of millions of dollars into the facility in less than nine months. It remains unclear whether the Mac mini expected in the coming days is the model Apple plans to begin producing in Houston later this year.
Wider Mac roadmap
Beyond the Mac mini, Apple is expected to release additional Macs in the coming months, including an iMac with new color options and a refreshed entry-level MacBook Pro, both using M6 chips. The most significant Mac introduction in the pipeline is described as Apple's first touch-screen computer, expected as new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with redesigned cases and OLED screens.
