Xcode 27.1 beta arrives for Apple silicon Macs

Apple on September 18, 2026 released the first beta of Xcode 27.1, the developer toolchain update that introduces support for the company's forthcoming foldable iPhone Duo. The build is available on Apple silicon Macs running macOS 26.6 or later and ships with updated SDKs for the Duo as well as a simulator that mirrors the device's new poses and orientations.

Targeting iPhone Duo and iOS 27.1 apps

The release is the first Xcode build through which third-party developers can compile and test applications against the Duo form factor. Apps built against Apple's iOS 26 SDK will need to be updated for iOS 27 to gain basic Duo support, while apps built for iOS 27.1 and later are positioned to take full advantage of the larger display. Reporting notes that properly optimizing most apps for the Duo will likely take more than a few weeks, given open-versus-closed layout and sizing considerations.

Timing relative to the Duo launch

Apple previously committed to releasing the Duo developer tools before the end of September, and the Xcode 27.1 beta meets that pledge even though the hardware itself does not reach customers until October. The iPhone Duo will be available for pre-order on October 16 and is scheduled to ship on October 23, with pricing starting at $1,999. Separately, Apple is shipping iOS 27.2 as the next software update for iPhones running iOS 27.0, while the Duo will run iOS 27.1, a build tailored to the foldable design, before syncing with the rest of the lineup in a later release.

Other developments

Apple separately released an update to XProtect Remediator, the built-in macOS malware remediation engine, taking it to version 163 across supported macOS releases from Catalina onward. The prior versions were 157 generally and 159 for the macOS Golden Gate release.

Developers can now download Xcode 27.1 beta 1 from Apple's developer website, with further betas expected before the Duo's October 23 ship date. Apple's broader iOS 27.2 rollout for current iPhones is the next adjacent software milestone tied to the Duo cycle.
