McKesson's Q2 print and immediate market reaction

McKesson reported second-quarter revenues of $105.4 billion, up 7.7% year on year, exceeding analyst expectations by 1.2%. The company, which traces its roots to 1833 and distributes pharmaceuticals, medical supplies and technology to pharmacies, hospitals and providers, delivered a satisfactory quarter overall with a beat on EPS estimates. Despite the revenue outperformance, the stock was flat after the results and traded at $868.87 at the time of writing. The muted market reaction was attributed to results being largely priced in ahead of the print.
How McKesson compared with the broader healthcare providers & services cohort
Across the 39 healthcare providers & services stocks covered in the quarterly review, the group beat consensus revenue estimates by 1.7% and next-quarter revenue guidance came in 1.6% above consensus. Even so, the cohort's share prices declined on average by 1.2% since the latest earnings results. McKesson's flat trading therefore compared favorably with the sector's negative average return, and its revenue beat of 1.2% trailed the group's 1.7% average beat, putting it roughly mid-pack on that metric.
Q2 highs and lows among peers
The best-performing stock in the group for the quarter was CVS Health, with revenues of $106.1 billion up 7.3% year on year, an outperformance against estimates of 6.7%, and a beat on both EPS and full-year EPS guidance, though its shares were down 9.1% after reporting and traded at $94.90. The weakest quarter was delivered by AdaptHealth, a home medical equipment provider with a network of roughly 680 locations across all 50 states, whose results highlighted the range of outcomes within the sector.
Valuation context and ongoing buybacks
Separately, a separate analysis published the same day noted that McKesson could be about 11% undervalued based on a fair-value model placing the stock at US$980.80 against a recent close near US$869.26, with bulls citing rising sales and large buybacks. The note pointed to specialty and oncology pharmaceutical adoption and recent acquisitions, including Core Ventures and PRISM Vision, as improving revenue mix and supporting higher operating margins, while bears highlighted the earnings slip behind the recent share price rise. The article flagged tighter drug-pricing regulation and further vertical integration by manufacturers and payers as potential risks to that valuation case.
