Strong electronics demand anchors Linde’s results

Linde’s third-quarter performance was driven by a combination of electronics growth, pricing and project-backlog contributions. The company reported sales of $9.4 billion, up 9% year over year, and adjusted EPS of $4.59, up 9% and ahead of the $4.52 analyst consensus cited by Reuters. Adjusted operating profit reached $2.8 billion, up 8%. Underlying sales grew 5%, with volume contributing 2% and pricing 3%, according to the earnings-call transcript.

The standout end market was electronics, where sales rose 15% year over year, driven by organic growth in APAC and the US. Linde also has approximately $2 billion of electronics projects under construction in the US, Korea and China. These projects represent an operating and project pipeline rather than a new order disclosed at the call.

Higher guidance reflects earnings momentum

Linde raised its 2026 adjusted EPS guidance to $17.82-$17.92 from $17.70-$17.90, partly reflecting a now-expected currency benefit of about 2%. For the fourth quarter, management guided to adjusted EPS of $4.40-$4.50, implying 5%-7% year-over-year growth and including a 1% sequential currency headwind. Management did not assume an economic improvement in the outlook.

The guidance indicates that Linde expects recent operating momentum to continue, but it does not establish a new run rate for the company because the restructuring program, Lincare weakness and regional demand remain unresolved. The call also identified a Woodside project with revenue expected in the second half of 2027.

Project backlog supports growth visibility

Linde reported an $11 billion total backlog, including an $8 billion sale-of-gas project backlog across four geographies. Approximately $1 billion of the sale-of-gas backlog was expected to start up in the fourth quarter. The backlog supports prospective revenue visibility, but the reviewed reporting does not provide a customer-by-customer conversion schedule or identify additional procurement opportunities arising from the earnings release.

Capital deployment exceeded $9 billion year to date, with roughly half invested in the business and the remainder returned to shareholders. Operating cash flow was $3.2 billion, up 8% year over year, while base capital expenditure was flat compared with the prior year, or down excluding currency effects.

Lincare remains the principal constraint

Linde recorded a $425 million restructuring charge in the quarter, with roughly half for severance and most of the remainder for portfolio and asset actions, particularly in Lincare. Management said Lincare reduced year-to-date EPS growth by approximately 1.5%-2%, and no meaningful improvement was embedded in fourth-quarter guidance. The company is also evaluating strategic options for the business.

Operating margin was 29.4%, down 30 basis points year over year, although it was essentially flat excluding cost pass-through. Combined gas-segment margin improvement was offset by declines in engineering and Global Other. The next test is whether restructuring actions and pricing discipline can translate into improved profitability without weakening volume growth.

Broad demand is uneven

Chemicals and energy sales increased 12%, manufacturing sales rose 7%, food and beverage sales advanced 3%, and healthcare sales grew 2%. Middle-single-digit healthcare growth excluding Lincare indicates that weakness was concentrated in the home-care operation rather than the entire health-care portfolio.

Europe remained weak, with management identifying no clear near-term catalyst, while China’s domestic demand was also described as weak. Helium supply and pricing remain affected by disruption in the Middle East. These factors help explain why the company’s underlying growth remained more measured than its headline 9% sales increase.
