Resident Evil reboot trailer unveiled
Sony Pictures Entertainment released the first trailer for a new Resident Evil film directed by Zach Cregger, whose previous credits include Weapons and Barbarian. The story follows Bryan, a medical courier played by Austin Abrams, whose emergency run turns into a survival ordeal after he encounters a zombie and the world around him collapses, according to the film's logline. Cregger wrote the screenplay with Shay Hatten and told CinemaCon attendees that the games influenced the movie extensively. The supporting cast includes Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Paul Walter Hauser. The film is produced by Constantin Film alongside PlayStation Productions and is scheduled for theatrical release on September 18.
Johnny Depp's Ebenezer debut at Comic-Con
Paramount Pictures unveiled the first trailer for Ebenezer, a darker reimagining of Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol directed by Ti West, with Johnny Depp starring as Ebenezer Scrooge. Depp made a surprise in-character appearance at San Diego Comic-Con, emerging from a faux snow-covered storefront labelled "Scrooge and Marley" dressed in overcoat and top hat, and later unveiled the trailer in Hall H. The trailer's promotional text frames the role as a return for Depp, referencing Jack Sparrow, Edward Scissorhands, and the Mad Hatter before declaring "the master of misfits returns." The supporting cast includes Andrea Riseborough, Rupert Grint, Daisy Ridley, Ian McKellen as Jacob Marley, and Tramell Tillman. The film is produced by Emma Watts through Wattsco and IN.2 Films in association with Domain Entertainment, and Paramount has set a November 13 theatrical release.
Jana Nayagan opens in theatres
Jana Nayagan, the political action drama directed by H Vinoth and starring Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, opened in theatres on July 23 after more than six months of delays linked to a dispute with the Central Board of Film Certification. The film was eventually cleared with an A certificate after 12 changes, having originally been scheduled for a January 2026 release. The cast also includes Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Prakash Raj, Priyamani, Gautham Vasudev Menon, and Narain, with music by Anirudh Ravichander. Fans queued overnight outside cinemas, burst crackers, and cheered during first screenings, though early reactions were mixed, with some viewers praising Vijay's screen presence and others criticising the screenplay, visual effects, and Deol's villain track. Vijay has framed this as his final film before transitioning to full-time politics.
Ramayana trailer postponed amid Sony Pictures deal
Hours before the planned global trailer launch for Nitesh Tiwari's mythological epic Ramayana at San Diego Comic-Con, producer Namit Malhotra announced the trailer's postponement alongside a new international distribution agreement with Sony Pictures Entertainment. The trailer had been scheduled for release on July 24 at 8 am. Malhotra described the Sony deal as a milestone that would allow the film to be presented to international audiences on the scale of a major Hollywood release. Ramayana is being mounted as a two-part production with a reported budget of around $500 million, roughly Rs 4,000 crore, across both instalments. The cast is led by Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram, Sai Pallavi as Sita, and Yash as Ravana, with Sunny Deol, Ravi Dubey, Lara Dutta, and others in supporting roles, and music composed collaboratively by AR Rahman and Hans Zimmer. At the Comic-Con panel, Kapoor described playing Lord Ram as daunting yet a once-in-a-lifetime responsibility. The first part is slated for Diwali 2026 and the second for Diwali 2027.
