Netflix sets Dec. 10 premiere for 'The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey' limited series

Netflix's limited series "The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey" will premiere on Dec. 10, with the streaming platform also releasing a first look photo of Melissa McCarthy and Clive Owen as Patsy and John Bennett Ramsey. The series explores the unsolved murder of JonBenét, who died Christmas night in 1996, with her body found in the basement of her family's house just hours after she was reported missing.

Deadline reported that Netflix will tie the premiere to the 30th anniversary of the six-year-old's killing on Dec. 25, 1996. The series was first reported to be in the works in March 2024 and completed production in January 2025, originally greenlit at Paramount+ before moving to Netflix in July.

Cast and creative team behind the Ramsey project

Emily Mitchell stars as the titular role alongside Garrett Hedlund, Alison Pill, Shea Whigham, Owen Teague, Clifton Collins Jr., Angus Caldwell, Jaime Ray Newman, Rory Cochrane and Chris Bauer, with additional cast including Will Patton, Jeremy Bobb, John Billingsley, Josh Stamberg, Margo Martindale and Tzi Ma. Richard LaGravenese serves as showrunner, writer and executive producer, with Anne Sewitsky directing and executive producing.

The series was co-written by Harrison Query and Tommy Wallach, who also executive produce alongside McCarthy and Sewitsky. David C. Glasser, Ron Burkle, Bob Yari and David Hutkin executive produce for 101 Studios.

Netflix's prior JonBenét documentary and audience performance

Netflix previously released "Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey" in 2024, timed near the 28th anniversary of Ramsey's murder. The documentary ultimately became the most-watched series on the streaming platform during the week of Nov. 25, totaling 13.4 million views in those seven days.

Stanford Prison Experiment unscripted series commission

Separately, Netflix has commissioned an unscripted series titled "The New Stanford Prison Experiment," based on the notorious Stanford Prison Experiment. The series is set for an October release, per a Variety exclusive.

Streaming industry lobbying effort in Washington

Elsewhere in the streaming sector, Amazon, Netflix and YouTube have launched a streaming lobby group in Washington. The new coalition was reported by The Next Web alongside other industry developments.
