Record-Breaking First Half for Steam

Steam generated $11 billion in gross revenue in the first six months of 2026, putting the platform on course for its most lucrative year on record. According to Alinea Analytics' Rhys Elliott, that figure already exceeds Steam's earnings for the entirety of 2020, the year of widespread pandemic lockdowns, and nearly matches 2021. A dense autumn release schedule is expected to push full-year numbers into record territory.
Big-Ticket Releases Lead the Charge
Three premium-priced titles have paced Steam's 2026 sales. Resident Evil Requiem, Forza Horizon 6 and Crimson Desert each generated close to $200 million in Steam sales alone during the first half, putting them well ahead of runners-up Slay the Spire II, Subnautica 2 and the dark-horse indie hit Meccha Chameleon.
$70 Price Points Becoming the Norm
A common thread among the leading blockbusters is their $70 asking price. Elliott attributes a meaningful share of Steam's windfall to higher price points on major new releases, which are increasingly becoming the standard across platforms. Despite this shift at the top of the chart, new releases still account for less than a fifth of overall sales.
Back Catalogue Continues to Outperform New Releases
Even with a string of high-profile launches, the share of Steam's gross revenue coming from new releases is trending down, falling roughly 6 percent compared with last year. The pattern mirrors the long-tail economics that historically rewarded Hollywood home-video sales, suggesting players are increasingly buying games years after launch rather than at release.
Asian Expansion and Storefront Consolidation
Asia, and China in particular, is embracing Steam in large numbers, adding to the platform's growth. Meanwhile, major publishers that once attempted to compete with Steam using their own clients, including Ubisoft's Uplay, have effectively returned to the storefront. The success of small, inexpensive multiplayer titles such as Meccha Chameleon underscores Steam's role as a primary host for the genre.
Storefront Features Expanded in Parallel
Valve has separately overhauled Steam's gifting system, allowing cross-region purchases with prices matched to the recipient's local store, and introducing guest checkout so buyers no longer need a Steam account to send a gift. Wishlists have also gained custom categories, shareable links and more granular notification controls, alongside broader storefront improvements to search and navigation.
