Steam is estimated to have generated a record $1.7 billion in revenue in September 2026, a 13% increase over the platform's previous September peak set in 2025, according to Alinea Analytics figures cited by Tom's Hardware. September also marked Steam's strongest third quarter on record, with an estimated $5.5 billion in revenue, up 12% from the same period in 2025. That brings Steam's estimated revenue for the first nine months of 2026 to $16.5 billion, compared with $14.5 billion across the first nine months of 2025.

New versus established IP on the platform

Among the 500 top-grossing games on Steam in September, established IP accounted for 79.5% of revenue, including 3.8% from remakes and remasters, while new IP releases in 2026 generated the remaining 20.5%. Tom's Hardware pointed to several major releases as contributors to the month, including Wardogs, which generated an estimated $86.9 million since its early-access launch on September 10; Onimusha: Way of the Sword at $30.4 million; and The Blood of Dawnwalker at $26.9 million.

Free-to-play revenue concentration

Free-to-play games remained a significant share of Steam's business. Counter-Strike 2, Apex Legends, PUBG and Dota 2 together generated almost $168 million in September, which Tom's Hardware noted is nearly 10% of the platform's total estimated monthly revenue.

Release slate closing in on a new annual high

As of October 1, Steam had recorded 20,220 game releases in 2026, with another 1,156 titles scheduled for launch in October. If those releases arrive as planned, the platform would surpass the 21,268 games released in 2025. Tom's Hardware, citing Alinea Analytics, estimated that Steam could potentially surpass $20 billion in annual revenue for the first time, even as the cost of building a gaming PC has climbed in 2026.
