Steam Gifting Now Works via Email

Valve overhauled Steam's gifting system, allowing purchases for any recipient using only an email address and guest checkout. The change eliminates the prior requirement of being friends on the platform, building on a 2024 feature that previously applied only to digital gift cards and hardware. Gift recipients receive a secure claim link in their inbox, and buyers automatically receive a full refund if a gift remains unclaimed after 30 days.
Regional Pricing and International Limits
The modernized checkout automatically matches the recipient's local regional market when the recipient is already on the sender's friends list, addressing a long-standing pain point in the global PC gaming community. International gifting, however, still requires both sender and recipient to reside in the same country, since emailed gifts are not yet supported across borders.
Wishlist Gets Custom Categories and Sharing
Valve redesigned Steam's wishlist architecture to let players organize saved games into named custom categories such as "Indie Games," "RPGs," or "Holiday 2026." Users can now generate shareable web links to specific categories rather than exposing an entire backlog, tying the wishlist directly into the new gifting flow so relatives can buy from a curated selection.
Additional Wishlist Interface Improvements
The update introduced notification controls that alert players only when games in chosen categories go on sale, release a demo, or exit Early Access. Browse speed is improved through instant autocomplete in the wishlist search bar, prominent flags for active demos on wishlisted titles, and hover-over micro-trailers that preview gameplay directly within the list view.
Black Flag Resynced Stays in Steam Top 10
Two weeks after debuting at number one on the Steam charts, Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced remained among the platform's 10 best-selling games. According to the report, the remake held the fourth spot on Steam's paid best-seller list, outpacing competing low-priced titles such as Palworld.
Sustained Player Counts and Sales Milestones
Black Flag Resynced continued to record daily concurrent player peaks of around 43,000, roughly 50% of its all-time peak, an unusual figure for a single-player release after two weeks on sale. Ubisoft has separately stated that the remake has already surpassed its internal sales expectations for the entire first year, setting multiple new records for the franchise.
