Sony Interactive Entertainment announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) on October 1, 2026, bringing its PlayStation upscaling technology from the PS5 Pro to the standard PS5 for the first time. The feature went live the same day in Insomniac Games' Marvel's Wolverine and Sucker Punch Productions' Ghost of Yōtei, according to a PlayStation Blog post by Sony Interactive Entertainment graphics research and development principal engineer Daniel Craig. Craig wrote that the "computational demands" made PSSR on PS5 "impossible," whereas QSSR is more streamlined and "hand-tuned" for the console. QSSR is available to all PlayStation developers and is part of Project Amethyst, Sony's collaboration with AMD that also produced the upgraded PSSR 2.0.

What QSSR changes for Marvel’s Wolverine

In Marvel's Wolverine, QSSR activates by default rather than as an opt-in setting, according to Update 1.002.000 patch notes released by Insomniac. The patch, which must be downloaded from PSN before play, lists QSSR alongside fixes for Photo Mode issues, several out-of-bounds bugs, accessibility features such as Navigation Assist and Lock On, and "overall game stability" improvements. Insomniac head of technology Mike Fitzgerald said QSSR adds "more pixel-level clarity and stability to our environments, bringing out extra detail amidst the busy streets of Madripoor, the dense alleyways of Shinjuku, and many other areas across Logan's epic journey." The update marks what coverage described as the first major feature added to the game since its PlayStation Store release last month.

Ghost of Yōtei ships with QSSR support

Sucker Punch Productions rolled out QSSR in Ghost of Yōtei on the same day. Lead rendering engineer Jasmin Patry said the technology lets Yōtei players "experience the world we've created with even more clarity and detail," adding that "QSSR excels at resolving the fine details in our characters and environments and does so with a level of temporal stability that hasn't been possible on the PS5 console until now." Sucker Punch released comparison videos that the reporting said show visible improvements in image quality, particularly for players using Performance Mode at 60 FPS.

Position relative to PSSR and PS5 Pro

Craig positioned QSSR below the Pro-tier technology, writing: "While PSSR remains the gold standard on PS5 Pro, QSSR provides some notable improvements to both image detail and image stability on PS5." GamingBolt reported that Marvel's Wolverine is the first base PS5 title to ship with the feature, framing the launch as a test case for wider adoption. Adoption timelines for other first-party PlayStation Studios and third-party developers were not disclosed.

Other developments

Separately, publisher Playstack and developer Stubby Games announced that the roguelite first-person shooter VOID/BREAKER will exit Early Access and launch on November 4 for PS5, Xbox Series, PC, and Game Pass, according to VGChartz.
