Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. said consolidated net revenue for August reached NT$514.8 billion (about $16.35 billion), a 53.3% increase from a year earlier and 10.1% higher than July. The monthly figure marked the fourth consecutive month of revenue growth for the world's largest contract chipmaker. January through August consolidated revenue climbed 39.3% year-on-year to NT$3.387 trillion (about $107.41 billion).

AI demand keeps advanced nodes fully booked

The company tied the surge to continued strong demand for chips used in artificial intelligence applications, particularly AI server processors built on advanced process nodes. Research firm TrendForce reported that TSMC held a 72.5% share of the global foundry market in the second quarter, with its 5-nanometer, 4-nanometer and 3-nanometer capacity fully booked throughout the quarter. Samsung Foundry ranked second with a 5.9% share, followed by China's SMIC at 5.4%, as the world's top 10 foundries posted record combined revenue of nearly $53.49 billion in the period.

Capital spending raised and earnings momentum carried forward

In July, TSMC raised its 2026 capital spending forecast to a record $60 billion to $64 billion amid strong AI chip demand. The company reported second-quarter net income of NT$706.56 billion (about $22 billion), up 77.4% year-on-year, on revenue of NT$1.27 trillion (about $39.45 billion), and guided third-quarter revenue to a range of $44.6 billion to $45.8 billion. Analyst Gil Luria raised his price target on a "highly bullish" outlook, citing management's emphasis on "strong demand from customers with conviction in the multi-year AI infrastructure build-out."

Market reaction and supply imbalance

TSMC shares closed 0.61% lower on Thursday ahead of the revenue release and slipped a further 0.40% in pre-market trading on Friday. Bloomberg reported that the company is "struggling to meet overwhelming demand from the global AI infrastructure buildout," while noting analysts on average expect 46.8% sales growth for the current quarter. Separately, TSMC and Dutch chip equipment maker ASML announced an initiative to advance the industry's transition to next-generation chipmaking technology, with TSMC planning to deploy ASML's High NA technology in large-scale manufacturing for advanced nodes starting in 2030.

Next milestones to watch

Investors will look to TSMC's September monthly revenue release and third-quarter earnings report for confirmation that AI-driven order momentum is translating into the company's $44.6 billion to $45.8 billion revenue guidance. Additional signals on capacity expansion will come as TSMC moves toward large-scale High NA EUV deployment targeted for 2030.
