Waymo said on October 6, 2026, that its vehicles will begin driving in Detroit this week with no human behind the wheel, marking the robotaxi operator's first fully driverless market in the U.S. Midwest. "Detroit, we're starting fully autonomous driving! This week, you may start seeing our vehicles on the road without a human driver," the company posted on X, adding that riders are still not being picked up "quite yet." The company confirmed separately that the service will initially be available only to Waymo employees while it establishes a "safety framework" for operating in the city.

Where the vehicles are driving

The driverless operation covers downtown Detroit and surrounding neighborhoods including Corktown, Midtown, Hamtramck and Indian Village, with Waymo saying it will "gradually expand across the broader metropolitan area over time." Local station ClickOnDetroit reported the rollout on October 6, noting that Waymo spent several months "familiarizing the Waymo Driver with the city, coordinating closely with local officials, and engaging with community members."

The path from mapping to driverless

Detroit became Waymo's first announced Midwestern expansion city on November 3, 2025, drawing on an engineering presence in suburban Novi and prior winter testing in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Human-driven mapping of Detroit streets began in November 2025 using all-electric Jaguar I-PACE and Zeekr RT vehicles, with Waymo technical program manager Jake Tretter saying at the time that city-specific edge cases such as Michigan left intersections and harsh winter weather are learned "one city at a time." The October 6 announcement is the first company confirmation that those conditions now hold without a human specialist present.

Detroit inside Waymo's 2026 rollout

Detroit follows a sequenced 2026 expansion that brought first paid riders to Denver, San Diego and Tampa on August 26 and to Las Vegas on September 1, and comes as Waymo targets more than one million paid rides a week by the end of 2026. Detroit is positioned as a winter-capability test for additional northern U.S. cities on Waymo's announced road map.

Follow-up signals

Waymo has not given a public date for opening paid Detroit rides, with the next verifiable milestone being the transition from employee-only operations to a public rider launch in the city.
