Blend Labs reported second-quarter 2026 revenue of $33.8 million, up about 7% from a year earlier, on a continuing-operations basis after the company completed the March 2026 sale of its title business and now operates as a single segment. Software-platform revenue of $31.4 million carried the result, while professional services contributed $2.4 million; cost of revenue held steady enough to deliver a second-quarter gross margin near 73.5%. Operating cash flow for the quarter, calculated by subtracting the year-to-date first-quarter figure from the six-month cumulative figure in the cash-flow statement, was approximately $7.9 million, a marked reversal from the negative $6.5 million that the same subtraction produced a year earlier.

The headline still includes a net loss of $1.5 million, but the loss narrowed sharply from $6.8 million in the year-ago quarter, and the six-month operating loss of $6.6 million is meaningfully smaller than the $12.8 million loss recorded in the first half of 2025. Stock-based compensation remained a heavy $7.0 million for the quarter, and depreciation and amortization rose to $2.9 million in the first half as the company capitalized more internal-use software, which we treat as an inference rather than a directly disclosed intent. The quarter therefore reads less like a recovery story and more like a still-unprofitable software company whose cost base is contracting faster than its top line.

Business Model and Profit Engine

Blend is a cloud-based software platform sold to banks, credit unions, and independent mortgage banks to run the consumer-facing origination workflow for mortgages, home equity, vehicle, personal loans, credit cards, and deposit accounts. Customers pay a usage-linked or transaction-linked SaaS fee, which the company calls Success-Based Pricing, so revenue scales with the loan and account activity of the underlying financial institution. That link is the dominant economic feature: the customer pays with operating dollars tied to its own origination volumes, which makes Blend's revenue inherently cyclical and exposed to mortgage rate swings, while creating a high gross-margin software layer on top of every transaction.

The profit engine converts that revenue into gross profit at roughly 73% in the latest quarter and roughly 74% on a trailing-twelve-month basis, reflecting the fact that software-platform cost of revenue is largely hosting, third-party data, and customer-support headcount rather than direct cost of goods. Below gross profit, however, the engine stalls: research and development, sales and marketing, and general and administrative spending together still exceed gross profit, so operating income remains negative even as it improves. Capital intensity is light, with $0.8 million of capital expenditure in the second quarter of 2026 against $7.9 million of operating cash flow; working capital is favorable because deferred revenue of $31.5 million at quarter-end substantially exceeds trade receivables of $14.4 million, producing a meaningful negative working-capital benefit.

The principal revenue engine is software platform, which accounted for $31.4 million of $33.8 million in the quarter, with professional services acting as a smaller, lower-margin support layer. We do not have segment-level economics broken out beyond continuing versus discontinued operations, and we have not been given customer concentration percentages, so customer-acquisition cost, true net revenue retention, or any single-customer dependency cannot be quantified from the available evidence and are labelled data gaps. The observable conditions that would weaken the profit engine are a sustained drop in U.S. mortgage origination volumes, the loss of a meaningful share of platform customers, an inability to renew success-based pricing, and renewed growth in general and administrative spend after the cuts already disclosed.

Earnings Quality and Cash Conversion

They are calculations from SEC facts rather than separately reported quarterly line items. On a trailing-twelve-month basis ending June 30, 2026, revenue of $129.0 million produced a gross profit of $95.9 million, an operating loss of $16.8 million, a net loss of $4.3 million, and operating cash flow of $13.2 million, a swing from the prior comparable window driven primarily by a one-time $20.1 million working-capital benefit in the first quarter of 2025 that does not repeat. The accounting free-cash-flow proxy, defined here as operating cash flow minus total capital expenditure for the latest quarter, was about $7.1 million, and on a trailing basis was $7.6 million. Because the filings do not separate maintenance from growth capital expenditure, this number is best read as a cash-conversion indicator rather than a strict owner-earnings figure.

Earnings quality is improved by the heavy negative working-capital position implied by deferred revenue, but it is reduced by the $7.0 million of stock-based compensation in the quarter and $29.0 million on a trailing basis, which is non-cash but represents a real claim on common shareholders. The second-quarter diluted loss per share of $0.03 is small enough that mechanical annualized sensitivities are not informative; instead, the decisive cash-flow signal is that trailing-twelve-month operating cash flow is positive and growing, even as reported net income is negative because of non-cash charges.

Business Quality, Moat, and Industry Position

On the available evidence, the company is best described as an important participant, not a demonstrated core supply-chain bottleneck. This classification describes strategic position only; it is not independent proof of a moat or valuation upside. Blend sits in the application-software layer of U.S. mortgage and consumer-banking origination, an industry in which switching costs are high once a workflow is integrated with bank back-office systems, but in which the customer base is also consolidating. The company's product strategy emphasizes workflow orchestration, a configurable platform called Blend Builder, and an ecosystem of third-party data and service providers that the filing describes as a network effect. These are real switching-cost arguments, but they are not unique to Blend: large bank cores, modern point-of-sale lenders, and other workflow vendors compete for the same slot.

The clearest moat evidence in the filing is the integration depth described in the customer-relationship section, including deployment expansion from one product to several, and the success-based pricing model that aligns Blend with customer volumes. The clearest moat weakness is the cyclical exposure to mortgage origination, which the filing explicitly cites as a primary demand variable, and the fact that the company is still losing money on a GAAP operating basis despite a decade of operation. The combination means the business is durable in quiet markets but volatile in stressed ones, and the equity is not yet a clean compounder.

Management and Capital Allocation

Capital allocation has been the most observable management action in 2026. The board authorized a $50.0 million repurchase program in March 2026, and through June 30, 2026 the company had repurchased roughly 22.2 million shares at average prices between $1.48 and $1.81, leaving approximately $13.2 million of authorization remaining at quarter-end. The cumulative six-month cash outflow for repurchases was $37.2 million against an operating cash inflow of $15.3 million, which is a meaningful draw on liquidity, but it has coincided with a sharp reduction in share count from 256.0 million at year-end 2025 to 236.5 million at quarter-end.

The Series A redeemable convertible preferred stock issued to Haveli in April 2024 remains on the balance sheet at $169.2 million and continues to accrete, adding $4.9 million of non-cash charges in the quarter that further pressure GAAP loss attribution to common shareholders. Management has acknowledged material weaknesses in internal controls over financial reporting related to revenue recognition, and the 10-K and 10-Q both describe remediation in progress. On the observable side, the company has been disciplined on operating expense, with general and administrative spending down year over year, while on the cautionary side, founder and insider 10b5-1 trading plans adopted during the quarter, and a director's planned sale, introduce ordinary-course dilution and selling pressure but no evidence of mismanagement.

Valuation and What the Market Already Expects

The dated market capitalization is $358.3 million at a $1.515 share price as of August 28, 2026, against 236.5 million shares outstanding reported on the cover page of the 10-Q. The reverse-DCF framework embedded in the valuation analysis implies that the market is pricing free-cash-flow growth materially above the observed 7% revenue trend, which is qualitatively significant because it means the price already discounts substantial margin expansion and revenue acceleration rather than just continued modest growth. Free-cash-flow yield on the dated market capitalization is roughly 2% on the trailing accounting free-cash-flow proxy of $7.6 million, a low yield that only makes sense if the market is paying for growth that has not yet appeared in the reported numbers.

Ten-Year Cash Flow to Fair Market Value

The starting free cash flow is the normalized SEC cash-flow proxy, while every growth rate, discount rate and terminal rate below is an explicit editorial assumption rather than company guidance. Each annual cash flow is forecast and discounted separately; terminal value is year-ten free cash flow multiplied by one plus terminal growth, divided by discount rate minus terminal growth, and then discounted back ten years. Fair market capitalization equals that explicit ten-year present value plus discounted terminal value and a same-date balance-sheet adjustment when available. In the reverse-DCF, holding the 9% discount rate and 3% terminal growth fixed, and solving only for one constant growth rate rather than using the base-case growth path, the current market capitalization implies roughly 16.3% annual free cash flow growth for ten years. This is a sensitivity framework, not a price target: the terminal-value share shows how strongly each result depends on assumptions beyond the explicit forecast. Negative margin of safety means the current market capitalization exceeds the scenario value.

Benjamin Graham Lens

Blend fails Graham's margin-of-safety test at the dated price. Stockholders' equity is negative $74.4 million at quarter-end, with $169.2 million of redeemable preferred stock sitting ahead of common shareholders, so the tangible book-value floor is not protective. The accounting free-cash-flow proxy is positive, but the ratio of price to that proxy is roughly 47x on a trailing basis, well above any conservative Graham multiple. A famous brand in software and a falling share price from earlier highs do not constitute evidence of cheapness.

The culture evidence in the filing is consistent with a cost-disciplined operating team, but permanent-loss risk is real if mortgage origination volumes fall sharply and the deferred-revenue buffer unwinds without replacement volume.

Risks, Disconfirming Evidence, and What Would Prove This Thesis Wrong

Three observable thesis breakers would force the conclusion toward Worth watching or better: first, a durable rebound in trailing revenue growth materially above the current 7% trend, paired with operating-margin expansion; second, sustained trailing-twelve-month operating cash flow conversion well above the recent low-single-digit-million-dollar base, signaling that the working-capital benefit is not a one-time event; third, visible remediation of the disclosed material weaknesses in revenue-recognition internal controls, which would lift confidence in reported revenue durability.

The most likely wrong assumption is that current operating-cash-flow improvement is structural rather than partly cyclical. The opportunity cost is that an investor could wait for a clearer signal, such as two consecutive years of GAAP operating profit, before committing capital. Disconfirming evidence in the available filings includes the explicit risk-factor language tying revenue to mortgage interest rates and origination volumes, the redeemable-preferred accretion pressure on common-shareholder returns, and the founder-share pledges that can convert into forced selling.

Investment Conclusion

The valuation analysis's fair market capitalization in every scenario falls short of the dated $358.3 million market capitalization, and the trailing cash-flow yield of approximately 2% is not consistent with the level of execution risk the filings disclose. The conclusion is Overvalued at the dated price, with the article status publishable and confidence in the conclusion medium because the valuation gap is large but the company is real, cash-flow-positive on a trailing basis, and is buying back stock at disciplined average prices. A reasonable reader should treat the conclusion as a snapshot at the dated market data and revisit it if revenue growth, GAAP profitability, or cash conversion move materially from current levels.
