AstraZeneca is scheduled to report third-quarter results before the market opens on Friday, October 30, placing its expanding oncology portfolio at the center of investor expectations. Investing.com forecast revenue of $16.04 billion and earnings of $2.59 per share for the September quarter, while MarketWatch cited Visible Alpha consensus revenue of $15.99 billion, quarterly net profit of $3.2 billion and core earnings per share of $2.59.
The numerical consensus is broadly aligned, but the metric definitions are not fully interchangeable. Investing.com did not identify its $2.59 earnings measure as core, while MarketWatch explicitly described its $2.59 figure as core earnings per share. A GuruFocus preview used a different set of estimates—$12.03 billion in revenue and $1.53 per share—and did not explain the basis or currency of its quarterly revenue figure. These conflicting datasets should not be combined into a single forecast range.
Oncology sales carry the growth narrative
The main earnings question is whether AstraZeneca can sustain growth led by major cancer treatments. Investing.com said oncology generated approximately $14.1 billion in the first half of 2026, representing roughly 46% of total revenue, and grew 15%. It identified Tagrisso, Enhertu, Imfinzi and Datroway as key products investors would assess, alongside the planned fourth-quarter US launch of Zegfrovy.
That makes product-level execution more important than a headline sales beat alone. GSK shares fell 4.78% on Wednesday despite sales and earnings beating forecasts, with reports pointing to vaccine sales below consensus and doubts about pipeline-building strategy. This is a sector-level counter-example, not evidence that AstraZeneca shares will follow the same path.
Guidance may matter more than the beat
AstraZeneca expects 2026 revenue to increase by a mid-to-high single-digit percentage and core earnings per share to rise by a low double-digit percentage, excluding currency effects. MarketWatch reported that the company had no scope to raise its 2026 guidance, making management’s outlook for 2027 and any changes to expected operating leverage important tests of confidence in longer-term growth.
Profitability is a separate debate. Citi analysts cited by MarketWatch said AstraZeneca’s planned launch investment in tozorakimab for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and clinical development of the weight-loss pill elecoglipron could put 2027 margins under scrutiny. Investors will therefore need to judge whether investment for those launches preserves the earnings trajectory implied by the current forecast.
Pipeline timing raises execution stakes
The Imfinzi and Datroway late-stage study in advanced lung cancer is now expected to produce data in the first quarter of 2027 rather than by the end of 2026, according to MarketWatch. Investors may seek an update on AstraZeneca’s confidence in the data and expectations for it.
More broadly, Investing.com said more than 20 Phase III readouts were expected during 2026. That creates potential catalysts, but the reviewed reports do not disclose trial outcomes, regulatory approvals or commercial uptake associated with those readouts. The forthcoming results may clarify the pipeline narrative, but no conclusion on those events can be drawn before AstraZeneca reports.
Friday’s release is the next checkpoint
The immediate milestone is AstraZeneca’s scheduled October 30 Q3 2026 release. The central test will be whether oncology sales and pipeline commentary support the expected earnings growth, whether guidance remains credible, and whether management gives sufficient clarity on margin investment and the delayed lung-cancer readout. No reviewed report establishes a share-price reaction or a procurement opportunity from that release.
