AMD-Samsung HBM4 negotiations near conclusion

At the "AMD Advancing AI 2026" event held in San Francisco on July 23, AMD Chief Executive Officer Lisa Su said a final contract with Samsung Electronics for sixth-generation HBM4 high-bandwidth memory is "almost reached." The two companies had signed a memorandum of understanding in March after Su visited Samsung's Pyeongtaek campus, and now appear to be moving to finalize supply volumes through a formal contract.

AMD plans to install Samsung Electronics HBM4 in its "Helios" AI server rack, with shipping scheduled to begin from the end of the third quarter. Major technology firms including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Microsoft have already been secured as customers for the platform.

Korean diplomatic push for mega-scale tech contracts

South Korean policy chief Kim Yong-beom said at a briefing on July 22 that, on the occasion of President Lee Jae-myung's visit to San Francisco, mega-scale long-term agreements (LTAs) in semiconductors, AI data centers, and physical AI could be announced that go beyond simple MOUs. On July 24, President Lee was scheduled to hold successive meetings with the CEOs of Anthropic, OpenAI, Nvidia, and Broadcom, before attending a San Francisco AI Summit alongside Samsung Electronics Chairman Jay Y. Lee and SK Chairman Chey Tae-won. Kim added that concrete contract volumes on the scale of gigawatts could be announced across the three areas.

Related supply-chain developments

Separately, Chinese memory maker ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) is pursuing an initial public offering on the Shanghai Stock Exchange's STAR Market. The "KODEX China AI Semiconductor TOP10 ETF" posted a three-month return of 31.62% as of the 24th, with a cumulative return of 51.83% since its February listing. In a related packaging development, Nvidia signed a contract worth approximately $1.5 billion (about 2.2 trillion won) with Amkor Technology to expand semiconductor production in the United States, including an advance payment.

Stock reaction

AMD shares received price-target hikes from analysts in coverage dated July 24, following news tied to its AI computing plans.
