A 38-minute interval between two orbital launches

SpaceX set a new record for the shortest interval between its orbital missions, flying two Falcon 9 rockets just 38 minutes apart on the evening of August 15. The first vehicle lifted off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida at 9:12 p.m. EDT, followed by a second Falcon 9 from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California at 9:50 p.m. EDT. The achievement cut 27 minutes off the previous record, set on August 31, 2024, when two Starlink missions launched 65 minutes apart.
Commercial and classified payloads side by side
The first rocket carried eight Globalstar satellites into low Earth orbit for the Louisiana-based telecommunications company, deploying them sequentially over a roughly six-minute window that opened about 56.5 minutes after liftoff. Globalstar said its operations team established contact with each satellite and reported normal early health assessments, with further testing and calibration to follow before commercial service. The second rocket carried USSF-366, a classified payload for the U.S. Space Force, with a Space Systems Command spokesperson confirming only that the mission was assigned under a previously awarded National Security Space Launch Phase 3 Lane 1 task order.
Booster reuse and the year-to-date cadence
Both Falcon 9 first stages were recovered successfully. Booster B1090, flying its 14th mission, returned to Landing Zone 40 near the Cape Canaveral pad about eight minutes after liftoff, while booster B1088, on its 18th flight, landed on the droneship "Of Course I Still Love You" in the Pacific Ocean. The Vandenberg recovery marked the 650th landing of a Falcon booster. The twin flights pushed SpaceX's 2026 Falcon 9 launch count to 96, with Starlink missions accounting for roughly three-quarters of the year's activity, underscoring how reusable boosters are accelerating launch tempo across both coasts.
What remains undisclosed
Public details on USSF-366 are limited because of its national-security status. SpaceX's mission description does not identify the payload or disclose the deployment orbit, and the company ended its livestream shortly after the booster landed, consistent with its standard practice for classified missions. Observers have suggested the payload could be based on SpaceX's Starshield platform, which adapts Starlink hardware for government use, though SpaceX has not confirmed that characterization.
