Toyota has issued a recall covering 228,367 vehicles after identifying a potential second-row seatback safety defect. The action is directed at certain 2022–2026 Sienna Hybrid seven-passenger vehicles whose second-row seatbacks may not remain secured in a locked position, potentially reducing occupant restraint during a crash.
The recall was reported by KOAT on October 27, citing the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Toyota's October 20 notification. The disclosed population is limited to those Sienna Hybrid model years and configurations; the reviewed reporting does not establish broader impact across Toyota’s vehicle range.
Dealer remedies vary by equipment
Toyota dealers will update the supplemental restraint system electronic control unit software on affected vehicles. Vehicles equipped with the “Mobility as a Service” package will also receive replacement second-row seatbacks, making the physical replacement limited to that specified equipment group.
This staged remedy means the recall involves both a common software correction and additional hardware work for a subset of vehicles. The reviewed reporting does not disclose the number of vehicles in that subset, completion rates, repair costs or whether every affected vehicle can receive an appointment immediately.
Owner notification is scheduled
Toyota expects to mail owner-notification letters on December 7. Customers may contact Toyota customer service to determine whether their vehicle is included. That scheduled mailing is the next concrete verification point for the recall population; it is not evidence that notification or repairs have already occurred.
Hydrogen development remains a separate track
Separately, Toyota Executive Vice President Hiroki Nakajima said the company sees hydrogen as one of two major energy carriers alongside electricity, while emphasizing a multi-technology approach that also includes battery electric vehicles and hybrids. Toyota is developing the TR LH2 liquid-hydrogen racing prototype and Rally2 H2 prototype with TOYOTA RACING, and plans to advance the DKR GR FC Hilux fuel-cell model with Toyota Motor Europe.
Nakajima also said Toyota is developing fuel-cell solutions for heavy transport with Scania and IVECO and has signed a binding agreement to join Cellcentric as an equal shareholder alongside Daimler Truck and the Volvo Group. These hydrogen-development activities do not establish vehicle orders or new procurement demand, and they remain distinct from the Sienna Hybrid recall.
