Spider-Man: Brand New Day targets a historic opening

Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures' Spider-Man: Brand New Day is tracking an $800 million-plus worldwide opening weekend, a figure that would rank second only to Avengers: Endgame's $1.2 billion debut in 2019. The Times of India and Sacnilk report that advance ticket sales have crossed $60 million in North America and $120 million worldwide, with the studio reportedly targeting $300 million-plus domestically and more than $500 million overseas. Fandango has confirmed the film as its biggest first-day pre-seller of 2026, ahead of The Odyssey, while Deadline notes that first-day domestic presales are the strongest of any release in five years, a mark last held by Spider-Man: No Way Home. Tracking ranges reported by The Financial Express remain wider: Deadline puts the U.S. opening at $180–190 million, while Box Office Pro projects $230–250 million. The film releases on July 30 in India and July 31 in the wider international market.
The Odyssey clears $652 million worldwide
Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey has passed $652 million at the global box office after ten days in release, with $289 million from North America and $362 million from international markets, according to Moneycontrol. The film now ranks as the sixth highest-grossing Hollywood release of 2026. Its second weekend collected roughly $90 million from 3,943 theatres, a roughly 27 percent drop from its opening frame, even as its eleventh day recorded a sharper Monday decline of more than 60 percent. The Odyssey opened on July 17 with $124.5 million domestically and $264.1 million internationally, the largest global debut of Nolan's career, ahead of The Dark Knight Rises and Oppenheimer. Shot entirely with IMAX cameras, the nearly three-hour R-rated adaptation of Homer's epic stars Matt Damon alongside Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, Charlize Theron and others.
The Odyssey leads UK and Ireland chart
The Odyssey held the No. 1 position at the U.K. and Ireland box office for a second consecutive weekend, adding £11.8 million ($15.7 million) and lifting its local cumulative to £35.3 million ($46.9 million), according to Variety. Pixar's Toy Story 5 stayed in second with $2.5 million for a $65.2 million total, while Disney's live-action Moana took third with $1.8 million. Universal's Minions & Monsters was fourth, and the Indian political action drama Jana Nayagan, the screen swan song of Tamil star Vijay, opened in fifth with $596,324 from a wide specialized release. The week ahead introduces the Spider-Man: Brand New Day launch on July 31 across more than 300 U.K. locations, alongside specialized titles including Imran Perretta's Ish and a 4K reissue of Andrei Tarkovsky's The Sacrifice.
Two films, two paths to a billion
The Financial Express frames this summer as a race between two very different billion-dollar trajectories. The Odyssey is described as a slow burn, already at $652 million with releases still pending in Korea, Japan and other major Asian markets, and trade estimates suggest it could approach $800 million by the end of its third weekend. Spider-Man: Brand New Day, by contrast, is expected to be front-loaded, mirroring the pattern of the previous Tom Holland-led Spider-Man films. Spider-Man: No Way Home opened to $260.1 million domestically in 2021 and finished at $1.921 billion worldwide, a benchmark Brand New Day is unlikely to match on opening weekend but could approach over a full theatrical run.
The 2026 billion-dollar club so far
Three Hollywood films have already crossed $1 billion globally in 2026, the strongest start to a year for the milestone since before the pandemic. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie hit the mark first in early June from a $132 million opening, followed by Lionsgate's Michael Jackson biopic Michael, which drew roughly 63 percent of its total from international markets, and Toy Story 5, which crossed $1.02 billion within six weeks. The Odyssey is on track to become the fourth, with Spider-Man: Brand New Day a likely fifth if its projections hold.
What remains uncertain
The Spider-Man: Brand New Day figures are tracking estimates rather than confirmed results, and the spread between Deadline's $180–190 million U.S. projection and Box Office Pro's $230–250 million projection has not been resolved before release. Final opening weekend numbers will depend on walk-up sales, word of mouth and premium-format occupancy, particularly in markets such as India, where the film is tracking a Rs 50–60 crore opening, behind only Avengers: Endgame's Rs 65 crore debut. The next verifiable milestone is the film's July 31 wide international launch.
