Beating 'Endgame' to become Marvel's North America champion

Sony's "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," starring Tom Holland, has surpassed "Avengers: Endgame" to become the highest-grossing Marvel film ever released in North America. Tracking its fourth weekend, the film crossed the roughly USD 858.3 million domestic total that "Endgame" posted during its 2019 release, a benchmark the earlier film had held for years. One tracker placed the running North American total at USD 854.9 million as of the fourth Sunday, leaving the title about USD 3.47 million short of "Endgame" at the start of its fourth Monday, while another outlet reported the film had already cleared "Endgame" once weekday grosses were counted. The two figures reflect the same competitive moment captured at different points in the same extended weekend, not a contradiction in direction.

Fourth-weekend dominance despite a horror challenger

"Brand New Day" still led the domestic chart on its fourth weekend, collecting an estimated USD 39 million and adding roughly USD 109 million globally, according to industry tallies. That grip was briefly tested by "Insidious: Out of the Further," whose USD 10 million-plus opening day knocked the Spider-Man film from the top spot on the fourth Friday before "Brand New Day" reclaimed first place on Saturday. The horror sequel finished its first three days at about USD 25 million nationwide, reshaping the weekend's supporting rankings without dislodging the overall leader.

Closing on 'Titanic' on the worldwide chart

Globally, "Brand New Day" is narrowing the gap with James Cameron's 1997 "Titanic," whose lifetime worldwide total including a 2012 re-release is roughly USD 2.26 billion. The Spider-Man film had reached about USD 2.21 billion worldwide after its fourth weekend and was positioned to overtake "Titanic" within roughly a week. "Avatar" remained the all-time leader at approximately USD 2.9 billion worldwide across its various re-releases, with "Avengers: Endgame" next at about USD 2.79 billion, a figure scheduled to receive a further boost from a September 25 theatrical re-release.
