Sony opens the sixth 'Insidious' chapter with $3M in previews
Sony Pictures released "Insidious: Out of the Further" in roughly 2,700 North American theaters on Friday, with director Jacob Chase's film collecting $3 million in Thursday previews. The studio is projecting an opening weekend of about $23 million for the sixth installment in the franchise that began with 2011's "Insidious." The film is produced by Screen Gems alongside Stage 6 Films and Blumhouse Atomic Monster, and carries an $18 million production budget.
Critics give the sequel a mixed reception
"Out of the Further" holds a 59 percent approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Writing in The Hollywood Reporter, Frank Scheck said the film "proves routine in its elaborate plot machinations." The movie stars Amelia Eve, Brandon Perea and Lin Shaye, and centers on a young mother who can bring spirits back with her to the real world. It follows 2023's "Insidious: The Red Door," which saw the return of original series stars Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne, opened to $33 million domestically and went on to gross $189 million worldwide.
Lionsgate's 'Mutiny' joins the weekend frame
Lionsgate is releasing Jason Statham's action title "Mutiny" in 2,700 North American locations, where it opened with $700,000 in Thursday previews and is tracking in the high-single-digit range. Directed by Jean-François Richet, the film was produced by MadRiver Pictures and Punch Palace Productions on a $40 million production budget. Statham plays a former Marine who sets out to prove his innocence after being framed for murder. "Mutiny" holds a 49 percent approval score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and arrives after Statham's "Shelter" opened to $5.5 million domestically earlier this year for Black Bear.
'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' aims for a fourth consecutive win
Sony's "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," starring Tom Holland, Zendaya and Sadie Sink, is positioned to win its fourth consecutive weekend. Director Destin Daniel Cretton's feature recently set the record as the fastest movie to hit $800 million domestically and is expected to surpass 2021's "Spider-Man: No Way Home" as the No. 3 highest-grossing film ever in North America. Also opening this weekend are the Andrew Garfield-led "The Magic Faraway Tree" and "Spa Weekend," starring Isla Fisher, Leslie Mann and Anna Faris.
Looking ahead
The next major data point is the three-day domestic opening weekend tally, which will determine whether "Out of the Further" meets Sony's roughly $23 million projection and whether "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" clears "No Way Home" on the all-time North American chart.
