Spider-Man posts a record opening day

Spider-Man: Brand New Day posted the largest opening day ever for a North American release, earning $168 million on its opening Friday, according to reporting dated 2 August 2026. The figure surpassed the previous single-day domestic record of $157 million set by Avengers: Endgame in 2019. Early tracking projected a North American opening weekend of $325 million to $358 million, which would place the film among the largest opening weekends in domestic box office history. The same day's Independent report also placed The Odyssey and Toy Story 5 at second and third on the North American Friday chart. The film depicts Peter Parker embracing life as a full-time Spider-Man in a world that no longer remembers his identity.
The Odyssey moves up the R-rated rankings
Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey overtook American Sniper on its third Friday to become the fourth-highest-grossing R-rated film in North American history, Koimoi and Zoom TV reported on 2 August 2026. The film added $14.5 million that Friday, a 43.4% drop from the prior week, lifting its 15-day North American total to $359 million. Both outlets said the film was on track to pass Deadpool ($363.1 million) and The Passion of the Christ ($370.8 million) by the end of the 1–2 August weekend, which would move it to No. 2 on the domestic R-rated chart behind Deadpool & Wolverine ($636.7 million). The Odyssey's global cume had reached $721.6 million by the same Friday, with $362.6 million from international markets.
Mutiny tracking for a modest debut
Lionsgate's Mutiny, a Jean-François Richet-directed action thriller starring Jason Statham, was tracking for an $8 million to $12 million North American opening weekend ahead of its 21 August release, according to Koimoi's 2 August 2026 report. Early Box Office Pro estimates placed the film below recent Statham openers The Beekeeper ($16.5 million) and A Working Man ($15.5 million), but in line with The Expendables 4 ($8 million) and Wrath of Man ($8.3 million). Mutiny also stars Annabelle Wallis and Adrian Lester. Koimoi noted the film arrives while Spider-Man: Brand New Day is still drawing audiences.
What remains to be seen
The final size of Spider-Man: Brand New Day's opening weekend and the precise placement of The Odyssey among the all-time domestic R-rated releases will be confirmed when Sunday estimates are reported. Mutiny's tracking will likely firm up as it approaches its 21 August theatrical release.
