Opening-weekend figures and how the records stack up

Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios' Spider-Man: Brand New Day collected $927m in global ticket sales over its opening weekend, the second-largest worldwide debut ever recorded, trailing only the $1.22bn opening of Avengers: Endgame in 2019. Sony's Monday actuals put the North American take at $360m from 4,487 screens, lifting the film above Endgame's $357.1m domestic record once final numbers were tallied. The international leg generated $572m from more than 73,000 screens, including $121m from China and $49m from the United Kingdom. A reported $72m in Thursday previews was described as the highest preview total in history, surpassing Endgame's previous $60m benchmark.
Production budget, cast and story setup
The film carries an estimated $225m production budget and is produced by Marvel Studios and Amy Pascal, with Destin Daniel Cretton directing. Tom Holland stars as Peter Parker in his fourth appearance as Spider-Man, alongside Zendaya as MJ, Jacob Batalon as Ned, Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle, Sadie Sink in a spoiler-heavy antagonist role, Tramell Tillman, Michael Mando and Mark Ruffalo. The story picks up several years after 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home, following Peter Parker in a world where Doctor Strange's memory-wiping spell has erased public knowledge of his identity, as he investigates a new threat while his powers evolve. Critical reception has been strongly positive; review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes lists a 90 per cent score.
What drove the result, according to industry analysis
Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman said his focus was on audience response rather than the record itself, noting that "the audience loved the movie". Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige called the opening "truly phenomenal" and said the debut "reflects the enduring power of Marvel's characters". Coverage attributes the scale of the result to the nine-year chemistry of Holland, Zendaya and Batalon, the enduring popularity of the Spider-Man brand, and the absence of nostalgia cameos that anchored No Way Home's $1.9bn global run. Industry analysts frame the result as the strongest signal yet that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is regaining momentum after a run of softer releases including Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts*, both of which fell short of the half-billion mark.
Bootleg leak on X and parallel industry signals
A high-quality bootleg copy of Brand New Day was uploaded to X at 6.05am Pacific time on the day of its theatrical release, remaining online for at least seven hours and reaching 5.9 million accounts, with more than 143,000 likes and over 10,000 reposts before takedown notices from Disney and Sony removed most copies. The incident came less than a week after Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey was similarly leaked in full on the platform, drawing 2.1 million views; Universal Pictures said it would "pursue all appropriate remedies to protect our content and intellectual property rights". Despite the piracy, the theatrical run broke records, and the North American box office is described as on track to surpass $10bn for the first time since 2019. Other July titles tracking toward the $1bn mark include The Odyssey, which has grossed $911m globally to date.
What to watch next
Marvel Studios' next major release is Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled for December 2026, which will not screen on Imax screens split between Brand New Day and The Odyssey. The animated Spider-Verse trilogy concludes with Beyond the Spider-Verse, slated for next year, and is expected to push cumulative Spider-Man theatrical grosses past $12.5bn once Brand New Day completes its run. Continued reporting on Brand New Day's second-weekend hold and the rollout of piracy enforcement will be the next verifiable milestones.
Remaining uncertainty
Sources differ on the precise domestic gross, with some citing $355m as Sony's Sunday projection and others reporting $358m or $360m in final Monday actuals; all agree the film has surpassed Endgame's previous $357.1m North American record. The total run, including international legs and downstream earnings, has not yet been finalised.
