Square Enix Drops Demo Covering Full First Chapter
Square Enix released a free demo for Final Fantasy Resonance on September 3, 2026, letting players experience the game's entire first chapter across PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. Save data from the trial carries over to the full release, which is scheduled for October 22, 2026. The demo went live shortly after the title was featured during Sony's State of Play presentation the same day.
Sephiroth Confirmed as a Boss Fight
The accompanying trailer confirmed that Sephiroth from Final Fantasy 7 will appear in Final Fantasy Resonance as a boss encounter, shown through both CG 3D animated segments and 2D combat footage. The reveal adds Sephiroth to a growing list of franchise cameos Square Enix has already disclosed, including Gilgamesh and Ultima Weapon as enemies and Cloud among the supporting "Vision" characters. The trailer emphasized that Resonance is the first entry in the Final Fantasy series to use Square Enix's HD-2D visual style.
HD-2D Direction and Producer's Visual Notes
Producer Kiseki Nakashima previously described how the team translated the original Brave Exvius art style into HD-2D, citing experiments with voxels and layering 2D effects on top of other 2D effects before settling on HD-2D as "the most suitable way to represent" the game's challenges and cinematic scenes. The September 3 trailer showcased dungeons, cutscenes, and fights built around that style.
Final Fantasy Resonance Lineup of Cameos and Editions
Resonance adapts the story of the now-defunct mobile title Final Fantasy Brave Exvius and removes the original's paid gacha mechanics while retaining its tag-team Vision combat system. A Collector's Edition includes a Digital Deluxe content pack, artbook, soundtrack, and a Final Fantasy Trading Card Game promotional card, with pre-order bonuses covering a weapon, armor, and a magitek airship passkey. The game supports Japanese and English audio, with English and Japanese voice casts.
