Miley Cyrus's tenth studio album, “Bass Persuades,” fell from No. 1 to No. 157 on the Billboard 200 in its second chart week. Variety described it as the steepest drop it could find for an album in the week after a No. 1 debut, while the Toronto Sun described it as the largest fall from the top spot for a female artist in Billboard history. The previous record cited by the Toronto Sun belonged to Celine Dion, whose “Courage” fell from No. 1 to No. 111 in 2019.
A close debut after Atlantic's release push
“Bass Persuades” was released Sept. 18 under Atlantic Records and opened at No. 1, ahead of initial expectations. Parade reported about 61,000 equivalent units, roughly 70 more than Ella Langley's “Dandelion.” The release campaign included 16 vinyl variants, nine CD versions, six downloads and a cassette, as well as a reduction in the digital price. Before that push, the album had been projected to open outside the top five.
The album's title track reached No. 35 on the Hot 100, while Variety said reviews found the remainder of the album less of a dance record than the single suggested. Cyrus later released a video for the follow-up “Different Religion.”
The label and artist marked the debut
Cyrus wrote on Instagram that “Bass Persuades being #1 transcends a win,” described the process as fun and memorable, and thanked Atlantic. The label sent her a floral wreath shaped like a “1” and said in a letter that it was proud and lucky to work with her. The album is Cyrus's first release under Atlantic following her July departure from Columbia Records.
The Toronto Sun identified “Flowers,” from her 2023 album “Endless Summer Vacation,” as her biggest hit to date. The song won Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance at the 2024 Grammy Awards.
Two sold-out Hollywood Bowl shows
Cyrus has two Hollywood Bowl dates set for Oct. 16 and 18, her first major shows since a Mexico City festival set in November 2022. Nearly 1.5 million people entered the presale queue for the pair, and both shows sold out within 10 minutes, according to the reviewed reports. The two dates had a combined capacity of about 35,000.
Cyrus told Apple Music's Zane Lowe that she chose the Bowl because her bed was about a 10-minute drive away and said the dates were a test for a residency close to home. “I've learned now through the queue that my calculations are correct, and people will come to me. I don't need to drive to you. Proven. That was a test. I win,” she said.
