JuJu Watkins returned to college basketball after missing last season while rehabilitating an ACL tear she sustained in the second round of the 2025 NCAA Tournament. The Southern California star guard averaged 25.6 points in her first two seasons, and the third-ranked Trojans are now pursuing their first national championship since 1984.
Watkins said the return has generated substantial anticipation. She also said she wants to peak at the right time and enjoy the season while remaining healthy.
Exhibition return shows current role
Watkins scored 18 points in 22 minutes during USC’s recent exhibition win over California. She will share the backcourt with Jazzy Davidson, the Big Ten Freshman of the Year who averaged 17.9 points last season.
The two developed their friendship and on-court chemistry while Watkins was sidelined. Davidson said Watkins recognized similarities in how each responded to difficult moments and provided support while recovering.
USC brings together a veteran and new talent
Davidson led USC in points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks per game last season, when the Trojans finished 18-14 overall and 9-9 in the Big Ten before losing in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Guard Saniyah Hall recorded 23 points, six rebounds and five steals in USC’s exhibition, while forward Sara Okeke joined the roster as one of three five-star recruits.
Coach Lindsay Gottlieb said the group had demonstrated the ability to have an impact at a high level. Watkins also was named the Big Ten Preseason Player of the Year.
Leadership continued away from the court
During her rehabilitation, Watkins took on leadership responsibilities by arranging chairs for team meetings and observing the game from a different perspective. She said those experiences helped develop her basketball IQ and leadership skills.
USC is scheduled to open its season Monday against UNLV in Las Vegas in the Hall of Fame Series. Its early schedule includes a Nov. 15 visit to top-ranked South Carolina and a mid-December Players Era Showcase in Las Vegas against No. 13 Notre Dame and No. 4 Duke.
