Summer box office crosses 7 billion yuan
China's 2026 summer box office, including presales, exceeded 7 billion yuan (about $1.03 billion) as of Saturday, according to an online box office tracker cited by CGTN on August 1. The season features more than 120 domestic and international releases spanning historical drama, comedy, action, animation and science fiction. The China Film Administration's "2026 Film Economy Promotion Year" initiative, launched with relevant departments, has supported industry consumption growth, with estimates indicating the total output value of the film industry chain has exceeded 340 billion yuan so far this year.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day's fast start
Spider-Man: Brand New Day, released on July 31, posted an estimated $17.7 million on Friday across roughly 173,000 screenings in China, a 3.3% drop from Thursday that the Koimoi report described as the biggest and third-biggest single-day for any comic book movie in the market post-COVID. According to Koimoi, the film reached a three-day cume of about $71 million in China, with Saturday pre-sales of $8.1 million on more than 168,000 screenings. Overseas Idol, citing three-day figures that include midnight preview screenings, reported earnings of 480 million yuan over the same window — a slightly different yuan-versus-dollar reading of the period captured by the two trackers.
New top imported film in China
The three-day performance lifted Spider-Man: Brand New Day past Minions & the Big Monster to become the highest-grossing imported film released in China in 2026, according to Overseas Idol on August 1. The film sits ninth on the country's annual box office chart. The report attributes the run to strong word-of-mouth and walk-up demand, with 76.1% of tickets sold on the day and 23.9% through pre-sales, suggesting consumer momentum rather than front-loaded pre-release demand is driving the result.
Tracker forecasts and remaining benchmarks
Lighthouse Professional Edition projects a final box office above 1.5 billion yuan, while Maoyan Professional Edition estimates more than 1.6 billion yuan, according to Overseas Idol. If those projections are met, the report adds, the film would break into the top five of China's annual chart, trailing only Pegasus 3, Kung Fu Soccer and Dear You. Koimoi separately projects a three-day weekend of $60–70 million and a five-day opening of $115–125 million in China, which would rank as the third-biggest full opening and fourth-biggest three-day debut for Hollywood in China post-COVID. The next verifiable benchmark is the close of the three-day weekend and the film's first full week in release, alongside any updated figures from Lighthouse and Maoyan.
