"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" retained the No. 1 position at the North American box office in its sixth consecutive weekend, earning an estimated $23.3 million over the four-day Labor Day window after posting $18 million across the traditional Friday-to-Sunday frame. The tally lifted Sony and Marvel Studios' title to $923 million domestically through Monday, placing it within roughly $13 million of overtaking 2015's "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" ($936 million, not adjusted for inflation) as the all-time domestic champion. The film now stands as the longest-running consecutive No. 1 since 2022's "Avatar: The Way of Water," which led for seven straight weekends.

Global Cume Ranks Third All-Time Behind 'Avatar' and 'Avengers: Endgame'

"Brand New Day" crossed $2.4 billion worldwide, with $1.485 billion from international markets and $917.8 million from domestic through Sunday, cementing its place as the third-highest-grossing release ever. It trails only James Cameron's "Avatar" at $2.9 billion and "Avengers: Endgame" at $2.7 billion, while moving ahead of "Avatar: The Way of Water" at $2.3 billion. The film's $44.1 million global weekend, however, was narrowly outpaced by a rival Tom Holland-Zendaya ensemble.

'The Odyssey' Steals Global Weekend Crown in Eighth Frame

Universal and Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" took the No. 1 spot at the worldwide weekend box office with $45.96 million, edging "Brand New Day" by roughly $1.86 million globally and marking the first time since "Brand New Day" opened on July 31 that it has been knocked from the global summit. "Odyssey" added $13 million domestically and $32.9 million from 84 foreign territories, lifting its running global total to $1.627 billion ($584.7 million domestic). The film became the 17th movie to cross $1 billion internationally and is closing in on "Jurassic World's" $1.67 billion worldwide record as Universal's highest-grossing release ever.

Imax Records and Japan Launch Propel 'Odyssey' Forward

"Odyssey" delivered $22.2 million in global Imax ticket sales over the three-day frame, bringing its large-format total to a record $486 million and cementing Imax's status as the film's largest exhibition partner. The release also launched preview screenings on 62 Imax screens in Japan, generating $755,000 ahead of its wide domestic-style expansion there on September 11. North American Imax alone delivered $6.2 million over three days and $7.7 million over four days, underscoring the outsized role premium-format screens continue to play in late-cycle holds.

'Brand New Day' Caps Best Post-Pandemic Summer; Newcomers Underwhelm

The Labor Day weekend closed the strongest summer since 2020, with domestic ticket sales from May through early September reaching $4.73 billion, just shy of the all-time $4.755 billion record set in 2013. Rentrak's Paul Dergarabedian called it a possible "meaningful turning point for movie theaters." The frame itself was sluggish: Paramount's R-rated "By Any Means" opened fourth with $7.4 million from 2,903 theaters and an estimated $9.1 million through Monday, while Lionsgate's "Fall 2: Deadpoint" and A24's "Onslaught" trailed further behind. FranchiseRe's David A. Gross noted that "September and the Labor Day holiday are traditionally sluggish at the box office," describing the frame as one of the weakest in recent memory.

Next Milestone: 'Brand New Day' Eyes Domestic All-Time Mark

Sony and Marvel's "Brand New Day" is expected to surpass "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" as the highest-grossing domestic release within the coming days, given its $13.66 million gap and continued holiday-week momentum. Meanwhile, "The Odyssey" is set to go wide in Japan on September 11 after its limited Imax preview run, with subsequent international expansions likely to test whether it can overtake "Jurassic World" for Universal's global crown.
