Sony Pictures is preparing a re-release of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ that will feature extra footage, including a restored scene in which her Claire Temple character treats Peter Parker’s injuries after his fight with Scorpion. The clip was originally cut from the theatrical version, though Dawson had previously confirmed in interviews that she filmed it. The move adds a value-added element historically associated with home video, reintroducing it as a theatrical incentive to extend the film’s run.
The film, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, remains in approximately 2,400 theaters nationwide as of late September. No release date has been confirmed, but Sony is expected to target premium large-format screens during a quiet box office window. The studio’s past re-release precedent includes a Labor Day 2022 run of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, which generated $9.3 million domestically, and a Labor Day 2002 double feature pairing Sam Raimi’s original ‘Spider-Man’ with ‘Men in Black II’.
Defending the domestic box office record
‘Brand New Day’ has grossed roughly $950 million in North America, surpassing ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ ($936 million) earlier in the month to become the highest-grossing film ever at the domestic box office on raw dollars. The film is tracking toward a final domestic total of about $970 million and remains the highest-grossing release of the year. Worldwide, the film has reached $2.495 billion, trailing ‘Avengers: Endgame’ ($2.885 billion) and ‘Avatar’ ($2.92 billion).
The re-release is widely viewed as an attempt to push the film toward the unprecedented $1 billion domestic threshold, which no film has yet achieved. Past Spider-Man re-releases added roughly $30–40 million, suggesting that milestone remains unlikely but not impossible.
The ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Encore challenge
The re-release comes as Disney capitalized on its own encore campaign for ‘Avengers: Endgame’, timed to promote the upcoming ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ (set for theatrical release on December 18). That reissue debuted at No. 1 domestically over the prior weekend, generating $26 million in North America and $86 million globally, lifting the film’s lifetime domestic cume to $884 million.
‘Endgame’ would need an additional $85 million domestically to overtake ‘Brand New Day’, a gap analysts describe as unlikely given the typical sharp drop-off after opening weekend re-releases. More realistically, the film could approach the $900 million mark, though surpassing ‘The Force Awakens’ ($936 million) also remains in question.
Franchise crossover and connective tissue
The Claire Temple cameo deepens the integration of Marvel’s grittier Netflix-era characters into the Sony Spider-Man continuity. Temple, a figure who has appeared in ‘Daredevil’, ‘Jessica Jones’, ‘Iron Fist’, ‘Luke Cage’ and ‘The Defenders’, joins Matt Murdock/Daredevil (Charlie Cox), who appears in ‘No Way Home’, and Frank Castle/The Punisher (Jon Bernthal), who has a supporting role in ‘Brand New Day’.
Dawson’s restored scene is described as one of multiple surprises planned for the additional footage, with Sony declining to comment on further details.
Production scale and sequel positioning
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ runs 2 hours and 25 minutes, compared with ‘Avengers: Endgame’s original 3-hour-1-minute cut. The ‘Endgame’ encore included six minutes and 17 seconds of ‘Doomsday’ footage for Disney’s InfinityVision certified PLF screens, with non-IMAX and non-InfinityVision viewers receiving only two minutes and six seconds of bonus content.
The film is Sony’s highest-grossing release ever, having unseated ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ ($1.92 billion worldwide) earlier in the year. Tom Holland and Zendaya also starred in Universal’s ‘The Odyssey’ this summer, directed by Christopher Nolan, which has grossed $1.75 billion worldwide to become Universal’s top domestic earner of all time.
