Sony Pictures said on Saturday, August 1, that Spider-Man: Brand New Day, its 11th big-budget Spider-Man movie since 2002, was on pace to collect at least US$325 million at the North American box office from Thursday through Sunday, ranking second only behind Disney's Avengers: Endgame in domestic openings. Analysts projected roughly US$550 million in overseas ticket sales for a global opening of about US$875 million. The Business Times reported Sony spent an estimated US$225 million to make the film, excluding marketing. By the end of Saturday, The Week reported the picture had already taken in approximately US$685 million worldwide, with around US$240 million from North America and US$347 million from international markets.

Friday's US$168 million domestic total from 4,487 screens, including Thursday previews, marked the biggest single opening day in the market's history, surpassing Avengers: Endgame's 2019 record. Thursday previews alone delivered US$72 million, ahead of Endgame's US$60 million. To meet demand, some U.S. multiplexes devoted nearly half of weekend showtimes to the film, with screenings running as often as every 15 minutes at certain locations.

India records and three-day run

The film opened in Indian cinemas on July 30, a day ahead of its U.S. release, and posted the biggest Hollywood opening in the country's history. According to Sacnilk tracking cited by the Times of India, Brand New Day took Rs 60.60 crore on its first day, surpassing Avengers: Endgame's Rs 53.60 crore in 2019 and Avatar: The Way of Water's Rs 40.30 crore in 2022. The Week pegged the three-day India total at roughly Rs 215 crore (about US$25.8 million), and the Times of India reported a four-day net of over Rs 250 crore by Sunday, August 2. Gulf News detailed language splits for Saturday: English at Rs 38.35 crore, Hindi at Rs 21.75 crore, Tamil at Rs 3.75 crore and Telugu at Rs 2.75 crore, with Mumbai hosting 775 screenings and Bengaluru posting a 70.3 percent occupancy across 653 shows.

South Korea's five-day sprint and competition

According to the Korean Film Council's tracking service cited by the Korea Herald, Brand New Day surpassed 3 million tickets early on Sunday, August 2, five days into its release and beating the year's previous best mark, set by Hope only weeks earlier, by six days. The Marvel sequel sold 900,898 tickets on Saturday alone, accounting for 81 percent of the day's box office revenue and up 71 percent from Friday. It opened on July 29 with 688,381 admissions, the biggest first day for any release in Korea since the start of 2025.

As Spider-Man reached its 3 million milestone, Na Hong-jin's homegrown sci-fi thriller Hope crossed 4 million admissions at 19 days, joining The King's Warden and Colony as the only 2026 Korean films to do so. Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, opening Wednesday, climbed to a 27.2 percent share on the presales chart, trailing only Brand New Day at 55.4 percent, with Hope at 5.6 percent.

China summer market and Asian pipeline

CGTN reported that China's summer box office exceeded 7 billion yuan (about US$1.03 billion) on August 1, supported by a 22-consecutive-day streak of daily takings above 100 million yuan. Stephen Chow's Kung Fu Soccer led the year-to-date charts at over 2.1 billion yuan (about US$311 million), marking his directorial return after seven years. The mythological animation All Wishes Come True crossed 1 billion yuan (about US$148 million), earning praise from Frant Gwo of The Wandering Earth fame, who said Chinese animated cinema had 'truly arrived on the global stage.' Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Minions & Monsters were cited as foreign contributors to market depth. The pipeline includes the corporate comedy Make Zhonghe Great Again, which opened August 2, and Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, slated for mid-August. Gulf News reported that China had already contributed over US$71 million to Brand New Day's global haul as of Saturday.

Reception and audience composition

The Business Times noted that Brand New Day arrived to widespread critical acclaim, with the Rotten Tomatoes audience score standing at 98 percent positive on Saturday, an unusually strong mark for a superhero sequel. Film consultant David A. Gross pointed to pent-up demand for an iconic superhero as a contributing factor. Enact Insight founder Greg Durkin cited particularly strong turnout from Generation Z, defined as those born from 1997 to 2012, and themes including mental health challenges, loneliness and feeling unseen by loved ones as drivers.

What remains uncertain

Sources differ on the size of the global opening tally: The Week and The Business Times cited an analyst projection of US$875 million, while Gulf News reported a US$925 million figure based on US$325 million domestic and roughly US$600 million international, with some rival trackers suggesting the domestic number could edge higher than Sony's guidance. Analysts expect Brand New Day to become the eighth film ever to cross US$2 billion, though Avengers: Endgame's US$1.22 billion global launch record looks safe for now.
