Avengers: Endgame: Encore, a re-release of Disney and Marvel's 2019 blockbuster with added footage, opened to $86 million globally over its first weekend, Deadline reported. The figure includes $26 million domestically and $60 million from international markets, with Disney estimating the weekend was the highest-ever opening for an MPA re-release in the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil and dozens of other territories.

Close to 14% of the global take came from Imax screens, which generated $13.7 million, including $4 million domestic and $9.7 million international, according to Deadline.

Domestic placement and territory breakdowns

Deadline placed Encore's $26 million domestic debut as the third-best opening weekend ever for a re-release, behind 1997's Star Wars re-issue ($35.9 million) and 2011's The Lion King 3D ($30.2 million). Variety reported Encore returned to No. 1 at the domestic box office, edging out new release Primetime.

The film opened at No. 1 in China ($13.5M), the United Kingdom ($5.4M), Mexico ($4.2M), Italy ($2.6M), Brazil ($2.2M), Germany ($2M) and Australia, and was the top non-local release in Japan ($2.6M) and Spain ($1.7M), Deadline reported.

Climbing toward Avatar's all-time record

After the weekend, Avengers: Endgame's lifetime worldwide total reached $2.885 billion, putting it behind Avatar's $2.924 billion and ahead of the updated $2.495 billion global tally for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Deadline reported. Screen Rant noted the re-release had brought Endgame within $50 million of Avatar's all-time box office record.

Encore was timed to precede Avengers: Doomsday, which Screen Rant said debuts on December 18 and is referenced through additional Russo Brothers footage included in the re-release, according to Deadline.

Distributor framing and Marvel milestone

Disney's Global President of Distribution Andrew Cripps said the re-release "reiterates that there's a massive fanbase for this franchise," Deadline reported. Deadline noted the Marvel Cinematic Universe has now grossed more than $35 billion globally across 38 titles. TheWrap reported that all films in the domestic top five cleared $10 million over the weekend, with Marvel leading the field.
